The honeymoon with my phone camera is long over. Now whenever I take a picture it feels like social media. Hidden algorithms are making decisions for me. I want to go back to controlling the aperture and speed. I don't want any kind of software doing any kind of editing.

That being said, I do want something that's easy to carry around and easy to use and not too expensive. It could be a DSLR but I don't intend on swapping out lenses.

What do you think I should buy?

Sony DSC-RX100 VII. The only camera I still have.

I have been thinking about the RX100 VII but have heard the VIII will be coming out soon so I may wait. I’m tired of carrying around a heavy camera bag with multiple lenses. I’m willing to give up quality for something I can fit in my pocket. The quality of point and shoot cameras has greatly improved and computer editing has narrowed the gap even more.

HA! I have heard these rumors for the past 7 years. I think they are still rumors ;)

The compact that everyone really seems to be raving about right now is the Lumix L10 - though at $1500 I'm not sure that qualifies as "not too expensive." For my own money, I've been looking hard at the OLYMPUS Tough TG-7. I've heard lots of really great things about it from people who really love compact portables. It's apparently only owned by one person on this site though...

I have the Sony RX100 VII also. Great for a light carry when needed. Same as the Lumix L10 cost-wise at around $1500.
