Ok, I just finally realized that the "midrange" socre reported in history is just what it says--the simple middle of the range. What the heck use is that?

I've always assumed it was the Median! Why isn't that reported instead? Seems to me a much more useful number--it's easy enough for someone to do the midrange in their head from the max and min, but it's not possible to figure out the median that way! Computers are for doing calcs we cant do in our head--not the obvious ones.

My 2 cents.

The midrange is the mean -- though I'm not sure if it's calculated as the average score of all entries, or of the average of all votes cast.

No--I looked at a couple of samples, and the midrange =

High Score + Low Score / 2

That's not the mean or the median. It's just the midpoint of the range and does not reflect ANYTHING about the score distribution in that range, as the mean and median do.

Oh... whoops. That is a good point then.

Unless I have been out of the math loop to long the median is very easy to calculate since you just have to line up the amount of numbers and get the middle number. There are two medians in a even number challenge. Since there were 638 entries in the B&W II challenge then we have two medians. 319th place and 320th place and then we have to add the two together and divide them by 2 to get the median = 5.113
If this challenge had an odd number of entries [say 637 dropping one entry] it would have been 319th place = 5.114

This is all true, but you can't get it "easily". You have to go to results, look for the one in middle and see what it is.
I agree - median is very usefull (knowing it and your score you know if you're in top or bottom half), while midrange is of NO use at all.

This is the way I do it and itâs very âeasilyâ done. If I want to find out if I was above the median or below I simply take the total number of entries divided by 2 gives me the median. In the case of B&W II that is 319th and 320th place divided by 2 which = 5.1130. I scored below that so I was below the median in this challenge.
You donât have to figure out the median with each score in a challenge since each place represents a score so you do it by placement and entries. I guess that is what makes it easier for me the figure out.
And I agree the midrange listed in the challenge history is of no importance. Taking the top score and adding the lowest score and dividing by 2 = 4.663. That is an irrelevant number.

The point I was making is simply that I want to see Median (useful) instead of midpoint (useless) in the challenge history. Yes, I know how to get it with a little effort.

While they are fixing it, would it be too much to ask for a standard deviation?
