I was just looking at some tutorials and was just taught how to use adjustment layers to avoid altering original pixels.

How many of you use adjustment layers vs adjusting the original image?

I always use adjustment layers, for the simple fact that they can be edited all the time and they can even be turned off. If you modify your base layer, you would have to go back to undo any changes and sometimes you get lost in the process even with snapshots.

i always use adjustment layers as well. much easier fixing a mistake than dealing with snapshots and a bunch of "undo"

I never work on the original. Always save it to a CD and a folder on my computer if I've entered it into a challenge. Then work on a copy and still use layers.

I tend not to use adjustment layers if I'm doing a 2-minute edit, but if I'm going to be doing more than a couple minutes' work on an image I definitely use them. I love being able to go back & finesse the adjustments after the fact without redoing any subsequent editing. Very powerful.

I was taught to always 'save-as' before doing any work so you have a duplicate instead of the original. I don't use layers for basic editing..but I agree that it sucks when you want to go back.

P.S. Here's a handy way of organizing files:

Any shot you like and/or want to edit click save-as and name it "a-plus original file name" so like "a-img_1324" that way the ones you choose always pop up first. That's just what I do...thought I'd throw it in for interests sake.

I have never used them and do everything to the original, in a single layer. (not sure how - always get screwed up in the blending or something)

first thing i do when opening an image - even if i don't mess with it - is duplicate the initial layer, and work on that. i don't tend to use the actual 'layer/new adjustment layer' option too much.

if i don't end up editing - i don't save the file.

EDIT: this is just like working on the original file, but you aren't altering anything on the 'background' layer. so if you screw up you can delete the duplicated layer and start over. for BW i edit the duplicate layer, duplicate that one, and do the BW conversion to that. if it doesn;t work i still have the edited color version as well w/o having to undo much of anything.
