Vivid Light has an article on CD/DVD media in this month's issue.

Most articles I've read spend a lot of time telling you that it's too soon for anyone to be sure, but this one goes a bit further with input from Kodak. Given the recommendations in the articls for storage, it suggests that quality media (in this case, Kodak's) can have a life of 200 years. It also sites 3M, who put a 100 year claim. It's worth a read if you're using or considering optical backups.

This was good news for me... I've been optimistic about my backups because I always use quality media, store it in jewel cases, and archive it in a fireproof safe in my basement where temps vary little seaonally, and it never sees light. I rotate through media much more frequently than 100 year intervals, so I'm feeling pretty good about this strategy.
