i know ,film b&w cannot be compared to digital. has anyone got any process in photoshop that can be used to go very close to film black&white.

See this thread: Black & white - basic editting. Just remember, some methods are okay for basic editting, others are not.

Open up channel mixer in PS and click the tick in the box for monochrome and then play with the sliders so that they equal 100% total until you get the tonalities you are happy with.

There are many tutorials available on the net for getting such results using the channel mixer, or you could get this software.

I'm sure there are much more precise and complex ways to get a black and white digital picture, and it may not be good enough for all folks... But I'm pretty happy with this in PS CS:
Desaturate
Image>Adjustments>Variations
Push the slider all the way left, then click once on the yellow.
"Voylay!" as they say. Black and white without the blue.
