Does your vote change?
Here's the challenge: Vote on 3 challenges as soon as they're available for voting.
Look at your votes after rollover.
Do they surprise you?
I think that I vote much higher when I vote right away. I have no idea why. Perhaps I'm looking at them longer? Not in as much of a hurry? Because the challenge is fresh in my mind from shooting and I'm not tired of the ups and downs?
Anyway, I went back to look how I voted on negative space, and I gave a bunch of 8s that surprised the heck out of me.
This is not about how people vote, vote high, low, etc. I'm just curious if your voting pattern changes if you change when you vote on a challenge? |

Yup! When I vote at roll-in for the challenge, I tend to be more generous. I have no idea why. |

I know why - because nobody has as yet torpedoed your own entry ;) |

That's a fair point, I think. You go into the challenge voting full of enthusiasm, for both your own entry and those of others. Then, when your entry is scoring its usual low to mid 5, that enthusiasm wanes. |

I know people say this, one way or another, all the time. But I honestly don't think I'm conscious of the score on my own entry when I vote, no matter when I do it. I may be kidding myself, and I do know that my perception of what "fits the challenge" is influenced by what I've put in, but otherwise I just don't find myself thinking about my own entry as I vote.
Though I don't always manage to, I like to get in early and I'm pretty conservative on the first round - mostly 5's and 6's with the occasional 4 or 7. When I come back later to go through again, I bump - almost never lower - scores. In fact it's not uncommon that I don't even take a second look at the 5's and below. |

I try to vote right away both so that I'm not influenced by how my entry is doing and when the challenge topic is most fresh in my mind. I really like viewing how others responded.
But I also try to comment (at least) on the ones I have given more than a 6. As I'm commenting, which is generally later in the week, I sometimes bump the score (but don't often change it downward) based on what I see upon further viewing. Just as when visiting any other gallery I think it's fair to give everything a second chance at registering/resonating in my mind but here I don't often go back to every image. Commenting is helpful to me because I get to react both visually and verbally (mostly about what I like in the image).
So I guess, in regards to this thread, I don't think I would vote differently based on when I vote but on how many times I view an entry.
When the challenge is over I compare my votes to the actual results and marvel at how my taste might be different from the other voters. I also look at comments given by others to get their reaction and possibly gain insight to what I might have missed. That is when I might look at my own vote and say wow, I should definitely have scored that higher. |
