Hello.

I have a Sigma EF 500 DG Super that I bought for my Digital Rebel. I really haven't used it much. However, I have noticed that whenever I put it on ETTL mode so that the camera controls is, it doesnt work. It stays at 50mm and doesnt change with the focal length of the lens. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I thought the ETTL on the rebel only worked with the 550EX or 580EX from Canon.

I have a 420Ex myself, but I know that zoom control doesn't work if you move the flashhead up (for bounce) it only works if the flash is facing forward...

Don't know if that is the case...

I just tested this, and that's exactly it! How dumb is that??? Do you know if the same happens with the 550 EX?

Not true. I know that at least the 420EX works with ETTL also. I have the 420EX.

Now that you are going to start using this flash. Please let us know how you like it after you have used it a bit. I am considering it myself.

Why is that dumb? If you're aiming the flash up, it's only going to be useful if it's bouncing off something, in which case the zoom isn't going to apply. The flash zoom is much less important when bouncing and would depend on the flash angle, distance to the ceiling, and subject distance, anyway.

Yes, the 420EX, 550EX and 580EX all switch to a default "zoom" when in bounce mode.

The flash "zooms" to alter the coverage area of the light emitted from the unit - the closer the bulb is to the screen, the wider the coverage angle and vice versa. It also means that the flash̢۪s light output can be concentrated for greater distances and used more efficiently. (i.e. you aren̢۪t wasting light by illuminating areas not covered by longer focal-length lenses).

When you are bouncing the flash (and not illuminating the subject straight-on), it is no longer possible to associate the required light output with the current focal length (since the distance to whatever you are bouncing the flash off of can vary considerably), so it switches to the default "wide" zoom position to ensure as large an area of light coverage as possible.

The same is true when working in the wireless mode. A 420EX will default to the 24mm "wide end" when shooting in wireless mode even when shooting straight-ahead because it does not have any focal length information (unlike when the flash is attached to the camera).

Edit: darn, too slow! =]
