Just a few thoughts from a previous DPL captain. SC -- feel free to change things if I'm crossing a line.

It's soooo exciting to see over 70 entries in the landscape challenge. It would be nice if we could get over 60 votes on our entries (we can't vote on each other, so there will be less votes that way)

It is up to everyone individually to decide how they want to vote.

1. Let's keep it friendly. Yes, there's a good chance you may receive a vote of 4 or less. That does not automatically mean there's a troll. Some people may vote differently than you. Yes -- we can be disappointed. But don't let a couple of votes ruin the game for you. If there's a scores thread. We can have a little bit of FUN whining little about a score drop. But it's not the end of the world, what goes down, usually goes up, and then down, and then up and then down. It's not over until the fat lady sings.

2. If you have people returning from a long hiatus, let them know the scoring has changed quite a bit. Things that did extremely well 7 years ago, won't necessarily do as well now.

This is no longer an 8.6 shot

(ok, so that's more than 7 years ago. :). But the idea still holds. It's a different group of people. Don't get discouraged if things don't feel the same. They're different for everyone, and we're all playing on the same ice (hockey terms). The ice may appear more pitted and slushy, the zaboni is overdue, but we're all skating on that same rink.

3. If you have new people, remind them to ignore their own scores. It's so tempting to look at your score, see a 5.7, and then go to vote. Surely that photo of the duck isn't as good as my 5.7 shot, so I can't possibly give it a 6 or higher! Their score is fluid. Their 5.7 might end up as a 7.0. It's best to have them vote on some challenges that they haven't entered first. Then they can decide their voting structure and stick with it, even if their own shot is having troubles. (However many umpteen years ago I started here, I entered before I ever voted. And I voted that way. I'm getting a 5, their shot was worse, so that means it must be a 4 or 3.... I did things backwards, and didn't really understand that my opinion of what a persons shot is worth should have nothing to do with my own score.

4. Comment! Over the years people have become afraid of commenting because they didn't want any blowback.
a. You learn so much by commenting on other people's images
b. You may make a difference in someone else's photography life by commenting on their image.
c. If you don't appreciate someone's comment:
i. Ignore it
ii. If you can't ignore it. Consider politely reaching out and say you disagree -- would they like to know why? If they don't, leave it alone. It's their opinion. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion.

It's so wonderful to see DPL back up and running. I've been around less and less, and it feels hopeful to be back with a large, happy, excited group!

Please feel free to add constructive thoughts. I think we can ignore the "Don't give a 1 or 2 without a comment" thoughts. We could politely request that if you give a low score, consider leaving a reason. But that hasn't worked in the past. So let's not beat that horse.

And SC, please feel free to edit however you think is appropriate.

Thank you for this useful information, Wendy. Very well said. Voting is strongly encouraged. Please note that you must vote on more than 20% in the challenge before they count.
And as to comments... Give and you shall receive! (hopefully).

Amazing!! Thanks for the comment! You've set a high bar, I don't know that I can comment on all, I have an art show this weekend, but I will endeavor to comment more than normal!

Hope you're still blowwing a ton of hot air down a brass tube bassboy, great to see some old faces still in town.

You must have left out a punctuation mark somewhere to earn that 1% deduction ... ;-)

Great job!
