I like the second version.
Gray is a better color I think for showing photos.

Looks nice so far.

Overall your site looks very nice I think you have done well!

Please keep in mind these are just my opinions:

On the main menu when you mouse over and option I think it would be better to simply change text colors or etc rather than jump the text.

I'am not a big fan of the flash and audio on a professional site.
If I'm setting in my office go through looking for a Photographer I would not want a blast of audio coming out of my computer. When a visitor selects say like your contact option maybe if you used a blending or fade in transition for the info in instead of sliding it in may look better.

I think the orange frame would look better as a gray or etc.
The orange frame and font color are hard on my eyes. I also would move the orange frame and photo further to the right away from the main menu.

Please remember these are just my opinions and thought :) I think you have done great so far I would not "cheapen" your site with flash and audio.

Edit: If you really are hooked on adding sound maybe a simple low camera click would work. I have seen this used on some sites and it is not bad.

Check out LightBoxit is a combined effort of myself and gajmaj. I have just added some shots from Hawaii and some Cricket shots from the first test versus NZ.

My site is an online proofing tool where after a days event people that received a business card can enter a proof code that was written on the card. makes it easy to isolate photos for specific customers..
//digitalproofs.net

In regards to paypal its really easy to get set up so that after a transaction is authenticated and funds are transfered the information can be inserted into your own database... in my case mysql, this is great for retaing records and running sales reports against... I even on the fly generate a proof sheet of what a customer ordered, sizes, quantities etc so that I can print this proof sheet and take with me when getting prints. Its lice to retain accurate records without having to stay on top of orders all the time. all the work was up front and now it for the most part runs itself.. PAYPAL is a good thang

I found that I was starting to need a digital proofing site as well so I made a barebones site (like others posting here I just don't want to go home from a job writing web/Windows apps and build my own, 'course I never can bring myself to pay someone else to do what I do for a living so . . .)

Anyway, here it is with a link to the proofs that are hosted by MyExposure.com. I have already setup their site to actually resolve to Proofs.KevinRiggs.com but I haven't made the switch with my DNS host service; probably ought to do that.

Kevin I know what you mean :)

We have two son's that are both computer progammers and they do not like getting involved in it after hours either :) That is why I had to pay someone to help me out with the templates.

Our oldest son who lives in Austin helps me out as much as he can but trys to hold back. He installed osCommerce for me in a sandbox directory but I have not had the time to tinker with it. That and I have to learn as I go. I have seen some great Photographic Gallery sites doen using osCommerce.

Well, here is mine(ours). You see Theodor38 and I have joined forces to bring each of our styles to the masses. You can check out his pictures on this site, while mine can be found here.

I did the design and content of the site, Mehmet and I both have some of our photos on there, I am sure you will be able to tell the difference in our styles and pic out who did what. We will be turning our site over to a hosting agency, as I just don't have the time to continually update it...I like to think it is nice though! We will be adding a gallery for our photoart shortly, we will probably use 2checkout as the shopping cart, as that is ideal, though if you want a more controlled store, shopfactory is pretty decent. I would not recommend paypal, though some might.

Just curious - how come you don't like PayPal?
11/21/2004 02:12:32 PM · #40
I have not heard anything bad about PayPal lately?

I have heard "mostly" good news since 2002 when Ebay bought out PayPal for 1.5 billion dollars.

Before that they were a lot of bad news stories.

Some don't like having to give them checking account info to be verified but we just created a "dummy" checking account and use it for PayPal verification and etc. There are a number of banks that offer free checking accounts nowadays.

I don't like their user agreement, that allows them to hold on to your pay from another person indefinitely. There have been several problems in the past year with people not able to draw the money people paid them while still legally being obligated to ship the items...They would then have to fight a battle with paypal to get their funds.

I used to work in the webdesign business and this was true for almost all of the clients we dealt with, which is why we started using other shopping carts. Based on others' experience I don't want to get involved and risk getting hosed.

edit- I should mention that I do have an account, but I only use it for small amounts of cash, nothing over a hundred dollars.

Is that a SmugMug template or do you design it?

even better with paypal is the pay pal debit card.. this way you can access your funds via atm machine, or purchase with it wherever mastercard is accepted.

my site, i just finished putting it up...(well redoing it that is!) //www.phdmidcoast.com it's a flash site. I'd love any feedback! that said keep in mind im a 20 yr old college student with absolutely no education in any kind of design/art thing....but im pretty stoked with this site! ....I think it shows some of my better pics too, which i cant put in dpc portfolio just yet...

First impression... still waiting, still waiting.

EDIT: Ok.. finally loaded. If I weren't committed to seeing the site I would have bailed. Perhaps if you broke down the loading a bit. For example load each section on demand rather than having the person wait for the entire portfolio to load before being allowed to see anything that would help. Has the flash been optimized? Seems a little heavy for the size and quantity of photos you have.

no i dont think its been optimized...i dont know how to do that haha...how do you do that? also yeah i couldnt figure out how to load it in different sections...i dont know how to place .swf files in other ones either. how's the layout look anyways?
12/12/2004 09:54:28 PM · #49
agreeing with TechnoShroom...way too long to load, even with broadband. Dial-up, good luck. if your having trouble with flash, just try your standard good 'ol html.

other than the speed issue the layout looks nice, the pictures look nice.

the only thing that prevents this from being a great site is its downloadtime
12/12/2004 09:58:09 PM · #50
It took awhile for it to load for me too but having all the photos preloaded was kind of nice so in the end, I'm not sure I minded.

Is your site going to be used to sell your services or just display your work? If it's the former, I question some of the photos displayed. Otherwise, looks nice!
