Hi there, I was wondering what are the best colors for a family of 6 to wear for family portraits? We haven't done these since I was little, and it will be my dad, grandparents, sister, my husband & myself. I will not be taking the photos, but I thought my photo friends here at DPC could advise me on portrait photography... what are the best colors for us to wear to really make the picture look great!

These are for my dad's birthday (he's born on Thanksgiving).

I whish I knew more about this to give you a good answer. But I would imagine that all you really have to worry about is making sure whatever they wear doesn't clash. I wouldn't want anyone to wear anything overly bright as it will distract the eyes to the clothes and not the face. I've never really taken a picture like this but what I mentioned seems to like something I'd be mindful of.

BTW mirdonamy, I was born and raised in S. Florida too! Also, my brother currently ilves in L.A. Small world huh?

i seen some pictures where a family of about 6 or so were all wearing white and i thought it looked pretty cool but since it is close to christmas yoy could all wear fall colors or christmas colors.

and about your dad bieng born on thanksgiving, the date changes every year. sometimes my brithday falls on thanksgiving sometimes it does not

White could be nice... or all in orange, red and brown. My dad was born on Thanksgiving, though it changes ever year.. he was actually born on the holiday :) What is your birthday?

Yeah, no bright yellows or greens! That's for sure. I am just going to have to tell everyone what color to wear or it will look chaotic i think. I think i like the orange, red, brown thing, but should we do grey clothing with a fun backdrop instead?

Where in S.FL are you from? Where in LA is your brother?

Go check out Ed Lilley's "How to Run A Successful Photography Studio" - he has clothing ideas in there for portrait sessions. :) Easier than me typing 3 pages of text. :D

Best thing to do is stay with solid colors of similar colors/tones. Stay away from pattern and lots of different colors.
This is the best rule of thumb.
