My friend dropped his 20D with the 18-40L glass attached (I think that's what it is)...$1000 lens anyway. It was in a bag, but a small one without much padding.

We all held our breath....

Slooooowly he unzipped the bag to source out the origin of the *pop* we all distinctly heard.

Phhhheeeewww...the UV filter, again, saves the day! It's smashed to bits but the lens is remarkably unscathed.

:-)

The Last Thing The Camera Saw...

Amazing shot. Bet he had good insurance!

My card and the few pics on it survives- the camera still works, can play back and take pics, it's a matter of getting that lens back on. I might try and open up the body to see what I can see, maybe give it a try myself...

i'm very sorry to hear about your sudden loss, the fujifine pix S3000 is my fav. in that line of cams.

i know it is hard but you are not allone i work at wolf camera and we have ppl come in every day with broken digital cams. and the only thing we can tell them is that if the didn't buy our insurence it will be $200 flat fee for any of our tec. guys to even look at the prob. and more for them to fix it.

look at it this way he/she is going over the colourful fuji SupperCCD rambow to the wonderful image capturing world beyond.

Olympus uses xd cards too and I really like their macro (for a point and shoot)

Better yet- $10! Or more!

Nah, I'm just kidding about the donations. Santa (Dad) has offered to replace the 3000 (I've seen them as low as $199) but I figure I might as well get a 3100, it's only a little more. Then I found a 7000 for $543 and on and on...I would like to stick with Fuji (for now) because I have the XD cards, don't want to spend more for new memory...

Decisions, decisions.

Luuuucky. If I had something like that (i.e. very expensive), I'd probably buy extra insurance just to cover it.

Looks like my deductible is higher than the cost of a new (inexpensive) camera, so I will probably go that route rather than do the "insurance" dance. (I hate paperwork)

No, but my compliments on your fine taste!

:-) Thanks.

The kit lens would sell it for me. Every review I've read, every photog I've talked to, and all the threads here, have pointed out that the lens is oh so much better than the Rebel's. (Not to knock the Rebel! Let's not start that fight!)

Unless I get extremely wealthy sometime soon (ha), I would not be able to afford any extra glass, so the Nikon would be it. I played with one of those at the store, too, and it just felt "right" in my hands.

BUT, that's all a long way down the road. I've noticed the prices keep dropping as newer models come out, so maybe sometime next year...we will see.

I'm thinking of selling my wife to fund the purchase of a new 20D, any takers?

I would think a medium format camera would work out better :P

Sorry this is the only one I dare upload, more than my life is worth.

Sorry again, because I'm no portrait photographer, or any other kind come to that...

Sorry to hear about the deductible (I think that's what we call the Excess here in the UK). Always worth checking these things.
I'm kicking myself because I just recently realised that my glasses that I broke last year on holiday within UK would have been covered by my travel insurance. Although it was only an arm that broke I went to several opticians and none could order a replacement in that model so I had to get an entirely new pair. And when you are as short sighted as me it is NOT cheap.

Bad luck!

...

Sorry to hear about your hard times. I just wanted to empathize with you on your (camera) loss :) In February, after having my camera for only 4 weeks, it toppled off my desk... well, the little 602 didn't survive very well, wouldn't turn on, wouldn't do anything. I must have cried and beat myself up for about a week. I considered new cameras, but I was broke.... so that was out of the question. A new lense barrel assembly runs about $350 USD, so that was completely out of the question...

So, I did a little research, found a great link with the innards of the 602 all exposed, and just went to town. I figured that it was broken, and so I couldn't break it any more. I found the breakage in the lens barrel, and was able to repair it with a dremel and some very careful hands.

My point is, just keep your chin up, and know that things will get better. No matter how bad they get, they will get better. Maybe you can ask around for more 'unconventional' repair shops...ones that won't just order a new replacement part. Also, if you stick with the Fuji's, you might want to consider a 55mm lens adaptor with a UV / Skylight filter on the end of it. I put one on mine after my incident, and I know that it would have saved me some hassle if I had it on there to begin with.

Thanks everyone.

I found a store in town that has this model on close-out for $112, which is funny because I paid $299 for it just six months or so ago. Just goes to show ya how fast this technology is moving- perhaps the dSLR's will be in range soon if this keeps up! Now if we could get the lenses to drop in price like that, we would all be happy! (lol)

So, I'm on my way this morning to see if they actually have some left. (Found it on their web site, but couldn't get through on the phone last night- ended up in automated phone hell)

And, I am going to try to fix the broken one myself. If I get it working I'll give it to Dad- he has expressed an interest in having a camera, so that would be cool if I could get it to work again. Wish me luck.

(BTW, it did have the adapter ring on it- knocked that right off too! Being such light, thin plastic, I'm surprised it didn't crack in half, but it seems to be OK.)

I thought I was the only person that did stuff like that. Good luck on a new one though :-D

Wow...well, the adaptor ring I have is metal. I haven't tested the protection it provides by dropping it again, but I'll let you know how it goes if/when I do :)

None left. Bummer. I had a feeling it might be that way, that had to be close to cost- blowing 'em out to make way for the 3100. Too bad I couldn't get through on the phone; in the age of instant communication it seems it is harder now to get an actual, real live person than ever.

Sooooo, going to wait till next weekend and see what the "oh-my-God-it's-Christmas-again" sales bring. Might be able to pick up a 3100 for a pretty good deal.

Since my entry in B&W is not doing so well, maybe the universe is trying to tell me something here. ;-)

If you are looking for a replacement camera sponsored by Santa (your dad) and the S7000 is a bit off the budget why not the S5000? With the launch of the S5500 the prices on the s5000 droped to half. I tink it would cost more or less 300 bucks. And it's great. If you don't need the &MP of the s7000 you will be happy with it.

Thanks for the tip! I just went and scouted it out- the cheapest around $300, so that's a great idea! 10x and RAW would be a step up. I'll check around and see what I can find.
