Can anyone exmplain me how the resutls are calculated? i've done a rule of thirds and its making me a little confusen in my head. just wondering.

It's not that complicated really.

A couple cleanup steps happen before the votes are calculated. First, since you must vote on at least 20% of the entries in any given challenge to have your votes count, any votes from users who did not vote on 20% are flagged to be ignored.

Second, as disclosed in the challengs rules, there are systems in place to detect fraudulent voting and ghost ballots. Users whose voting patterns suggest an attempt to unfairly disrupt the system are subject to having their votes ignored. An automated system runs which detects such patterns and flags those votes to be ignored.

Once those systems have run, the remaining votes are averaged -- as with most averages, the votes are added up and divided by the total number of votes. The entries are then ranked in order by average vote received and the results page is created.
