I am trying to learn how to use PS. Currently I have a pic of a star (christmas decoration) that I would like to have on a transparent background, i.e. NO background. I have managed to select the background and delete it. I can see the checkerboard (i.e. transparency) and I can save it just fine (tried both tif and jpg).
I now have only one layer that appears to be exactly what I want.
Yet when I import this into anything else, it once again is in the shape of a rectangle with white background behind the star. What am I doing wrong? I bet there is a simple explanation, but the helpfile and manual just aren't telling me.
Please help!!!! |

don't believe tif or jpeg handle transparency. The only one I know of, and I know there are more, is Gif. |

Try PNG also.. that one supposrts transparent backgrounds AND 16 million colors (as opposed to GIF's 256 colors)

thank you very much, vontom! I just tried it - the gif works! But I wonder what problems I'll run into using that now..... :-(
And thanks to Refracted, too. I'll look into that option as well.

Another problem I have found using transparent background is that IE doesn't handle this very well ( doesn't make it quiet transparent ) while Firefox seems to work fine. This was with a PNG file. Not sure about GIF

Not sure on PNG but I know that Gif's are great for transparent backgrounds. Transparent Gifs are used for almost all webpages, to stretch things out.

i always keep my transparencies in the .psd file so that later on i can add it to things easily and keep the quality. as for displaying it on webpages then i believe gif is the only way.
