Post your outtakes from the Solo II challenge here.

I had a few to chose from, these two were my top contenders (both unedited phone photos) (maybe this one) but not really high on my list.

Maybe they were better than my entry which scored meh. I would love to know why two voters scored it three. Maybe it was bc of what the first commenter mentioned - that the child blended in with the edit, which to tell the truth I was aware of, but thought the entry might convey something else to the viewer. I guess I was wrong.

Thoughts?

Anita, I may not be the best source of info here, since I scored your entry a 7 and expected it would fare much better, but I suspect folks did indeed miss the child (though I’m not sure how that would happen, given it was in the title of your entry). Maybe some folks wanted to see the child more clearly, but I liked the effect you were going for. I do like your entry better than your other choices, though the photo looking straight down on the person with the umbrella is interesting.

I think you picked the right picture to submit. I made the comment about the processing but a score 3 in my scoring system would be for pictures that are either seriously flawed or don't fit the challenge theme, which is clearly not applicable here.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

Thanks again. I suspect those who gave it a three will not speak up. Maybe they just hate children;)

An additional comment: what color was the child wearing? Maybe you could have used the selective color mixer to make him/her stand out more. This can work very well when converting to monochrome.

FWIW, I like the red umbrella best and would have scored it better than your entry. To me, the monochrome edit didn't allow the child to "pop", making the photo more about the scene than the solo person.

Edit to add: the entry got a vote of 6 from me.

The child had a multicoloured raincoat which was distracting in colour that’s why I converted it to black-and-white.

I gave your entry 7. I think the child was rather lost in the picture. (But gee, I love that pavement.) I really like your outtake 2. It's a great viewpoint and the tiny figure is quite visible but definitely fits the solo theme. I would have scored it higher than your entry.

It is a very nice scene -- I can see what motivated you to enter it. However, in black and white she does blend a bit into the pavement. I suspect that, rather than converting the image to black and white, converting her multicolor raincoat to something like a monochrome red or yellow might have gotten you a better score. This type of color change is allowed in the Standard rule set.
