What comes to your mind?
To me, when I hear photography, I think of art. I want my camera not only to create a mood, but I want to be able to twist things how I see them. I feel the camera helps me greatly in this. I DO NOT however think in terms of "technicalality" IE... exposures, settings, etc. I think that comes AFTER you have the shot in your head, which to me is art. I believe this is one reason why I always score low. =)

JM, your Botany shot should've finished much higher IMO. I didn't vote, but I would've given it a top spot.
Nice.
Edit:: I very much agree with your post. BUT, a GREAT photographer is one who finds a balance between creativity and technical.

Thank you, I focus on the technical aspect, but not until after I have the shot set up. Even then, it doesnt play as important roll as it should.

You have to have the technical down well enough to be able to produce that vision in your head. You can't do that after-the-fact.

When I think of photography what comes to mind, for me:
1. Capturing a fraction of time to cherish for a lifetime.
2. Taking something ordinary and making it visually extraordinary.
3. Giving others the opportunity to see through my eyes while feeling my emotion.
4. Hoping one day to take the ultimate picture that others can see, smell, and taste the emotion or beauty within.
5. When verbally restricted by language, photography is our translator.

No just kidding.
I think its an image for the rest of your life. Whatever happens when you'll look at the photo you'll remember that day.

I think Harrison did that intentionally.
I used to run a mini-lab in a department store and people used to come up and ask me where they could pick up their "pitchers". I used to direct them to housewares.

I think this is the right sequence. Subject and emotional payload first, but then executed with technical proficiency if not technical excellence. To be a good pianist one must play perfectly in a technical sense. But to be a great pianist, one must also choose great music and play it with passion, or whimsey, or aggression ... in short deliver the emotional payload. |

This quote by Ansel Adams comes to mind when I hear the word photography:
Ă¢€œThere are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs." |
