As I read many of the comments around this site about photographs, I wonder how many people have calibrated their monitors? Software calibration has come a long way and is now integrated into many operating systems. For a great guide to monitor calibration via your OS, click the link below. Step by step, and in five minutes you will have a better outlook on the world. Your prints will be closer to what you intended, and the pictures on DPC will be truer to the artists intentions. Everyone wins!

If you are interested in color calibration hardware, it is now cheaper than ever. $140 USD at BHphoto [link below] will get you perfect calibration with hardware optical tools. For full disclosure, I use ColorVision Spectro Pro 2 at work and at home.

If it's any consolation I bought a Spyder last month...

edit: and I've calibrated twice since!

I now 'calibrate' several times a day if editing or voting. This is because the ambient light in the room changes depending on whether it's sunny or cloudy, whether the sun is in the east or the west, or if it's dark.

'Calibrate' early and often is my counsel.

Will adobe gamma do the work as a calibration tool? Or, do I need a spyder and software?

Adobe Gamma is "okay" but to do it right (and expensively) you want a Spyder. Depends on what's at stake. Are you making a livelyhood that depends on accurate color ... or just hobbying around?

You 'calibrate' several times a day with your Spyder?? Wow. It's a very time consuming event for me, which is why I've only done it twice (they suggest once every two weeks in the literature).

Definitely just (an expensive) hobby to go along with all my other (very expensive) hobbies (SCUBA, flying, guns, children, wife.....oops, I digress........)

Well, I'll add this to the other items on the list of "need to research for future purchase." Any brand or model that you favor?

Thanks

No, just a hobby for me. 'Calibrate' with Adobe Gamma. Takes 2 minutes.

I don't see an Adobe Gamma icon in my Control Panel. Am I missing something?

It must get installed with Adobe Photoshop because I just checked another machine that has Photochop and it's there. :)

I have PS7

Yep, my understanding is it gets installed automatically with PS. Though perhaps certain OS's and/or video cards override that?
