Okay, I'm late to the party here, but I was doing some calculations and ... well ... has anyone else already mentioned this?

The B&W challenge has 641 entries. At 150K each, that translates to over 96M worth of pictures to vote on (I would imagine some pictures are smaller, but you also have lots of tcp and http overhead together with the other images on the screen, so let's stick to 150K).

At home (where DSL is not available yet) I have a mere 28.8K connection. I get about 1 meg every 5 minutes. That means there are approximately 19 hours worth of pictures to download.

Add at least an hour for time spent looking/voting (641 * 5 seconds each = 53 minutes) so now I have 20 hours worth of time to be spent voting on images.

With only 7 days to vote, that means nearly 3 hours per day. Sitting at a computer. Watching images slowly come down and voting on them.

For me ... 150K is a good maximum.

For what it's worth, I try to stay after work every now and then so that I can access the site and vote quicker. But then ... I'm afraid that with the nudity that pops up every now and then, I could get canned for having let an unexpected image show up on my computer.

I'm not one for whining... I just thought the math was interesting and, hoping nobody else already wrote a similar message, I wanted to share the results.

Dude, do you really use a 28.8? Need 56.6K? I'm clean my stuff out at work and been tossing 56k'rs out right and left.

If he lives where DSL is not available, chances are he's too far from the CO to get a 56K connection. Beyond 1½ miles from the CO, you max out at 28.8.

Yup... it really sucks. For the exact same reason that I can't have DSL, I also can't get anything better than a 28.8K connection. (at least I get that ... used to be I would barely get up to 24K due to line noise)

I generally call and check for DSL availability about every two weeks ... just to make sure that QWEST knows that someone in my area wants it. :-)
