Just curious how everyone feels about using aftermarket presets for whatever editing software you use? I've always avoided them because it seems like an image isn't completely my own work if I use a preset pack from a professional selling their own custom looks.

I do not use any for photos but I am not against, though I would probably not buy ($19). IMO is not different than using the presets on let's say Nik or even those on LR (which I usually use as a base or as a final touch on my edits).

Edit: I do have some freebies for video editing. Those I do occasionally use as I find it way more difficult to colorise a videos than editing photos.

Well, I use presets a LOT as a way to home in on the look I'm after. Almost always, I then modify some aspects of the preset and then rename it and it goes in my personal presets folder. I have no problem with it. There are so freaking many variables in the programs now that you can easily miss a fork in the road that would lead you to your desired image if you try to slog through every variable whilst exploring.

But, then, if you DO work your way through laboriously, which I also do, then you can (and should) save the finished result as a personal preset so you can go back to it in the future...

I typically don't use commercially available presets; Like Robert I do create my own personal presets, but frankly I don't really use them that often. They can be really useful in some situations. Example: I have some quadtone presets that I created to mimic selenium prints that I really like and would be laborious to do from scratch each time.

Thanks for the input. Some of those preset samples look spectacular, but I also know they apply them to images that show them to their best advantage. Just changing from Luminar 4 to Luminar Neo (now that it has a full feature set and seems to not crash on my system anymore) and cannot import my existing custom presets.

Well yeah, but if you do a lot of tone mapping/HDR like I do, then targeted presets are invaluable, because what works for the Samsung doesn't work for the Sony doesn't work for the Drone, and it's not always obvious until you get back in PS and start nit-picking the details :-) I'm talking here about noise and color-shift issues primarily. When I find something that works, I guard it with my life...
