Pittsburgh will kicking off the holiday season with its annual "light up night" on friday. One of the events is a fireworks display. Any tips on getting the best images of the fireworks with the city skyline in the backround? Ive taken numerous night skyline images but never tried combining them with fireworks.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated!

This will be quite hard, as fireworks are very brighter than the skyline. In my opinion, fireworks require around 1.5s exposure to look good. Longer exposures are leading to fireworks beeing too much "extended".

try to take the image a few seconds before a firework goes up and once it explodes only keep the shutter open about another second or so.

Its gonna be hard since the display wont last very long and you have to be very quick in changing camera settings between shots to get the right exposure

For my (litle) experience 1.5s is to short exposure. 2 or 3 sec should be suficente to capture the whole spread.

Here are few examples:

I've only tried this once, July 4 of 2003, with my Coolpix 4500, using the Nikon Fireworks Scene Mode. The results were pretty good. Tripod mounted, 4 second exposures:
