I have the standard 18-70mm Nikon lens and the Sigma 105mm. I'd like to cover more of my telephoto range. So, I've been looking into the Nikon 70-300mm lens, see link below. Is this a good choice? Any other suggestions? Up to how much should I pay for it?

I just got 1. Paid more than that too. It is a nice sharp lens. You will need lots of light to use it though. Next to worthless in doors.

You may want to look at the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR (very expensive), Nikkor 80-200 2.8, or the Sigma 70-200 2.8. You can get a 1.4x or a 2x TC to extend the length. The 70-300 lens may be enough but most people eventually want to get the faster lens.

I just got in from my first time shooting with a 180mm Nikkor f2.8D AF, which I picked up used for $400. I am very pleased with it. I tried a few zooms, even with more reach, but decided the prime was a better piece of glass and did not constrict my shooting. I just shot my son's soccer game, in the late afternoon sun, with a border of trees around the soccer field casting deep shadows. The f2.8 enabled me to still shoot fast 1/750 to 1/1500 sec. The results are far better than I was getting with my 90mm tamron, my 24-120mm Nikkor or a 70-300mm zoom tamron. I sold the 70-300 because I was disatisfied with almost all shots at focal lengths greater than about 200mm.

Depending on what you are shooting, I agree with Moodville, go for faster glass.

If you can, I say get the Nikon EF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, it is in the same league as the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS, that is it's a fantastic zoom telephoto.

This is SO true! I've had my 75-300 f/4 less than a year, and this weekend ordered the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. Love the other, but really find that I need the 2.8 more and more.

Hmmmmmm....
70-200 2.8 ~1000$
70-300 4-5.6 ~100$

Not sure if I'm willing to spend the extra 900$.

Any other suggestions?

The sigma 70-200 2.8 is about 700 USD and a lot of people have been satisfied with that. There is a saying that you get what you pay for, so if you can only afford a 100 dollar lens then it will still work and you may even be pleased with it. But the better lenses are gonna cost more. At the end of the day you're the only one who can say how much you want to pay.

I had the same problem recently. I decided to buy a D70 and I found two offers. In addition to 28-80G kit lens, one came with 70-300G, and the other with 70-300D ED. The difference between them was about 120 Euros. Having been on a tight budget already, I didn't want to push it too far and settled on the 70-300G. Several people here on DPC told me that this lens is good enough for the price, if you keep its limitations in mind. I don't think I'll regret my decision, since I'm quite a beginner anyway and I see it as a learning tool, which I can later try to replace with something better if I ever improve myself enough to need one.

You might also want to have a look at these reviews:

Does anyone have any sample pix taken with the 70-300mm Nikon?

How does the star effect come out? I read that the aperture blades are rounded, which may prevent the star effect.

Ahhh the Bigma, very hard to handhold at 500mm, a tripod or monopod is a must at the long end.

I must be new to it all but it really isnt all that difficult to hold steady by hand.. just breath in and hold it in... and press gently... A monopod would be a nice tool to have to help with the weight.. its a 4lb lens... arggg

That's a $3600.00 lense in Australia, can't see me getting this soon for my hobby, what about something in the $600-$1000 mark.
