I took a self portrait tonight because no one else in my family would pose, what do you think?

I like it. The lighting is very nice and the only way to add that extra touch here is to add a backlight which will not only keep the background nice and even white but will add a kiss of backlighting. Even without this, you did great.

Thanks as always.

Very nice. One thing I'd add to Daniel's comments is that it appears you are too close to the background. Though perhaps with the lighting that wouldn't be apparent.

I think for Christmas I need to build my self a studio in my basement, buy some lights, backdrops, the works. All my portraits are taken in the bathroom because it has the brightest lighting and lightest colored walls. Everyone gives such good advice to me, and I can't wait to get some gear and do it the right way. Thank you so much for all of your great feedback.

it also appears that you may be slouching over a bit, i like the expressions..i also agree about gettinng the white a bit whiter in the background you could also just clone those dark spots out

Congratulations on some nice photos.

To me, the light seems a little too bright on your forehead and cheek. It kind of washes out the area around your eyebrows and eyes.

Your expressions are great.

Like was mentioned, if you could have put even a lamp or some light source illuminating the wall behind you to help get rid of the shadows.

Those are kind of nitpicky things. If this was a challenge photo, I would give it a 7 or 8.

On last thing, good job with your HP 935. I had one of those and had many issues with getting it to focus decently.

i feel like the softness of the photo doesn't do your facial features justice. your facial hair and your expressions don't seem to lend to a soft background. i guess it all depends on what look you were going for. i'd really like to see a sharper photo with a higher aperature.

I like the one with eye contact best out of the two. That said there's not enough to pull me to those eyes - maybe a touch of reflection of light - a catchlight - in the eyes would really make them the focal point?

Agree with previous comments about background - if you can set up a studio in your basement you'll be able to position models further from the background. You'll probably still want to light the background - use a separate light to the one on the subject.
