unlike Ted, however, I say we let this unabomber bomb away. One is on the scale.

I tend to agree with you, but what gnaws at me is that this "If it's not eye candy, it's worthless" attitude has a pretty serious effect on averages when all the eye candy gets decent scores and all the rest 1s, and only 30 people are voting :-(

Still, we're very reluctant to police the voting to the point of telling someone "You're bad, you hand out too many low votes", so where's the line going to be drawn?

Indeed! You know I don't agree with the ones in this case (I'm actually talking about the last couple of challenges), but I think it's important the voters have the right to wield them as they wish. The last thing SC needs to do is decide if people are voting according to some reasonable standard.

I agree in most cases. But if someone gives 1s to more than half of the entries in a challenge, that doesn't seem to be using the whole scale. (edited to add -- I don't think I've seen anyone give 10s to more than half of the entries in a challenge.)

Amen to that!

PS I wish I could, I am again struggling to take any photos, I just have no motivation, 3D and videos keep me going at the moment, I hope my love of photography comes back one day.

Not at all. One goal for me has been an entry withe a voting breakdown having a valley in the 5's with higher and lower quantities on either side. I think I've achieved it once, maybe twice. Funny thing is it was an abstract in an abstract challenge.

Sometimes my goal is to get comments from certain members who are known to appreciate things differently. Pulling in a comment from the kind of person I am trying to appeal to is the win.

1. My goal is to shoot something that makes me happy.
2. To get so excited by it that I want to share it with people.
3. With hopes of getting someone to experience/feel/want to feel the excitement that I do.

When I experience something wonderful - I want to share it. There was an incredible rainbow outside my house. Jeff was out of town. So I called two different neighbors and told them to go out and look. Success IS getting people interested/excited/intrigued/enraptured.

I hate seeing a sunset by myself.

But sometimes I go for comments. Hoping to just reach one or two people who "get" it.

Yeah, make people care, one way or the other ...
