Here's an idea, a Super Speed Challenge.
Ok, so lets see how well people can do in a very short amount of time. I say on a Friday evening or afternoon an email goes out to members saying "Prepare for a Super Speed Challenge tomorrow @ X'o'clock"
Then the next day, probably a Saturday cause most people will be at home and not at work. The challenge is announced and you will have 1 or 2 hours to shoot, edit, and submit. The idea is, lets see how creative you can be under a tight deadline.
Then we would have a shortened voting period of say 1 or 2 days.
I was thing this would be a Members challenge cause of Advanced Editing rules would probably be needed. And challenge topic could be anything or nothing.
This is something I deal with in my line of work all the time. Lots of pressure, but exciting too.
What ya think? |

Deadline: 10minutes!
You click the challenge, and from the time you see the Challenge, you must enter within 10min, or it will be closed. this way the challenge can be going for 1 day, and all timezones can see and enter..

The suggestion has been made several times. The problem is, no matter when you run the challenge, it'll be 3am somewhere. |

Ooooh! Terje found the answer! Except that it takes me 10 minutes to get my tripod ready.... |

scalvert, it's 24hours challenge. but you won't see the actual challenge until you click it, from that time you have 10min to submit.

Then they give you a topic like
"Studio group photography".
"Wedding photography"
or "Spell 'Digital Photography Super Speed Challenge' in a recognizable font using 2000 rice corns" |

I think you're on to something, but give us two hours at least! :) I wonderful if this would be complicated to program?

10 minuts is the time it takes me to read the challenge!
2 hours is like a minemum or even 3. |

Brilliant idea, terje!
After giving it some thought, though, I think there is a problem with this method. Here's a simple way to cheat: have a second account. Use this account to first get the challenge description, starting the 10 minute timer (though I think 1 hour is better, my dang computer takes 10 minutes just to convert a couple of RAW files). Then you take your sweet time getting the shot, log in as your 'real' account, read the challenge description there, wait a few minutes to make it look legit, then submit the image you already took. :-/
Yeah, only losers would do this, but the advantage they would have is huge. Other similar cheating techniques include getting a friend on DPC who isn't planning to enter the challenge to tell you what the challenge description is ahead of time, this would negate the need for a second phony account. |

You could also mess around with your computer's clock. |

Give us enough time to produce a quality photo, and not limited to a studio set-up. I'd say 4 hours is about right. And I think it could be either Basic or Advanced rules. Is there a way to prevent someone who has clicked the challenge from revealing the topic to others who haven't yet started their time clock running, or would we just have to rely on the Honor system? |

How about this variation... complicated, but maybe workable:
Each time zone gets a different, but related challenge topic, and you have one hour to submit. Every hour, a new topic is announced for the next time zone (and not necessarily in order). The topic becomes the title of your entry. You may only enter for your local time zone. That might rule out some vacationing DPCers, but they're less likely to compete in a Speed Challenge anyway. |

10 minutes is more then enough for a quality photo! :-)
Then have voting limited to 1 day.

dang it, one just swam by, and I missed it.
Not a bad idea, but rather than using advanced editing, how about no editing? Although I suppose that would give the advantage to folks with a hot rod camera. |

Don't they make a special CalimariCam for that? |

i think speed challenges are good because less people enter them. these 400+ entries in challenges lately are hard to keep up with... i barely even vote anymore because its too there are so many good photos and i just dont have time to vote properly. i would love to see more speed challenges or make the regular challenges less than a week and have more of them. that way not everyone and their butcher enters every one of them, making it easier to vote, and better chances of getting rated higher once in a while. does that make sense? |

Why do you find it harder to vote in a challenge with a large field? No one is required to vote on all the entries, just 20% of them. Do you feel that your opinion is less valuable just because you don't vote on all of them? I don't. |

Regarding the number of entries, and lack of time to vote on them -
It would seem to me that if we have time to take the pictures, process them and enter them into competition, we should also have the time to vote on them.
But, again, that's just my two cents worth... |
