Ok -- I stupidly didn't copy the original over for the pie day challenge.

I have now downloaded two "free" sd recovery programs. That even though they say you can recover a certain amount of data with no charge, both lied. :(

Do you know of an actual "free" way of recovering a deleted file from an sd card? Stellar found the file (but I couldn't recover it without paying them)

Please help,

thanks

I think it was SanDisk which used to offer free recovery software with purchase of their higher-end cards, but I don't know if that's still happening.

I haven't used or looked at recovery software in some time; In the past I used the EaseUS software with success, but from their web page, it looks like you have to pay for any recovery at all with the current version of their software. That conflicts with some of the "reviews" I've looked at, so YMMV. Another that may be worth a look is Disk Drill, which supposedly has a free version.

If you installed that at some point it still works fine.

One reason I try to hang on to legacy hardware -- the computer I installed it on probably won't run anything current ...

Stellar found the file and wanted to charge me $50 to retrieve the one file. EasyUS didn't even find it. (those were the two I downloaded. I found out that it's free to download it, but if you want to use it to actually get any files, you have to pay.)

Unfortunately, it's a relatively new machine, so I don't have any of my old software.

If you're not in a major hurry I can see if I still have the file and send it to you (not sure how large the executable is). ... or, I may have a download code (although it would be old - might work). I used it to recover some files a while back, and it worked fine. The SanDisk one the General mentioned.

... getting ready to head home now (will be a couple hours).

Ah well -- thanks Barry, it didn't find it. Only the one that wants $50 finds it. It was worth a try! Off to get DQd

Wendy, do you mind sharing with the community the story you shared with SC, as it might prove a cautionary tale to others...?

Sony A1 takes sd cards, but also takes cfExpress type A cards. Unfortunately, Lightroom sees the type A cards as external drives, so you can̢۪t just use the Import command in Lightroom with it.

so I̢۪ve been using Photo mechnics, because it̢۪s a much faster import. But Since it still sees it as a hard disk, I̢۪ve been doing something useful and stupid: I̢۪ve been going through and rating the photos on the card. The I only import the rated photos. This I don̢۪t put massive amounts of photos on my main drives.

I goofed. Not only did I rate the photos, but I edited the photos on the card. So when went out shooting again, I deleted all the photos from that date.

But I know it̢۪s the correct card, because the .psd file is on it!

Since I shoot mainly raw, I̢۪m not worried about the software changing the file. I use photo mechanics because I need to change the copyright when importing the files - my copyright for my files, and the Aquarium̢۪s copyright for work files.

So I need to change my workflow. :(
