I don't know, this has certainly been discussed somewhere before, but after about an hour of research, I'm still no closer to getting the problem fixed...

I have a Wacom Intuos III tablet that I'm running on a WinXP system and I have problems shutting down. When it gets to the screen that says "System is shutting down...", the computer locks up about 80% of the time. Never shuts off. It used to lock up 100% of the time, but I did discover that if I remove the mouse from the tablet and use the stylus instead, it shuts down properly from time to time.

If anyone has any suggestion about how to fix this, I would appreciate it *very much*. As it is, I'm climbing under the desk about every night to unplug the power supply from the tower. :( I love the tablet, but the situation is getting pretty aggravating.

A 4 pound sledgehammer should do it.

You've isolated it to this mouse? How so? Did you download the most recent drivers for the mouse? Service Pack 2 for XP? We need more details.

If it's a USB tablet (which I'm guessing it is if it's an Intuos 3) then have you tried unplugging the tablet before shutting down? What makes you think the tablet is the cause of your problem, anyway?

At any rate, I can tell you how to keep from crawling under your desk. If it won't power off, just hold in the power button for a couple seconds. The computer should turn off.

With that setup I think you have two input devices -- the mouse and the stylus. If both of them are sitting on or very near the tablet at the same time as you try and shut down, it may be that one of them is sending a signal to the system which puts the shutdown process on hold.

Try using one or the other to initiate the command, and have the other one a few feet away and see if that makes a difference.

You should maybe also run anti-spyware programs to make sure there isn't some surruptitious process running in the background which is holding things up -- XP is the primary target these days.

I don't even use the included mouse with my Wacom. Just as GeneralE says about interference with the stylus and mouse may be the problem.

I have downloaded the most recent drivers for the tablet and have all the latest for WinXP, with no improvement. It's not really the mouse's fault, because last night I left the mouse on the tablet and continually moved it during shutdown and it shut off fine. Today I tried the same thing and it locked up. I tried having both devices away from the tablet and shutting down manually using the "windows" button and it locked up. I have not tried unplugging the tablet before each shutdown, but there again, I'd have to climb under the desk to unplug the tablet (the USB cable is wired into the tablet on this end). I do know that it is the tablet causing the problem because I never had the problem before the tablet, only after. I have done some online reading and found that others also have this problem and have reported it, but last I read, Wacom does not acknowledge the problem.

Many thanks to superpope for the helpful power button tip... I had tried that before, but I guess I hadn't held it in long enough.

And to Spazmo99: Yes, I had considered that too :)

I would remove any mouse on the system, using device manager, then reboot, you will have to use the keyboard for that.
When windows finds the tablet point it to the new driver and it should be ok, assuming the tablet is the problem.
