Is this horse dead yet? Let's poke a stick at it and see...
Can someone please tell me, if anything is fair game for a calendar, then what exactly is the purpose of a Calendar challenge? What distinguishes Calendar from a Free Study?

Great idea, but let's arrange some leaves around it for November. |

i've been voting through this challenge, and have been trying to keep an open mind about the subject/ title relevance. however, i have this feeling that i wish they represented the month. it's like the feeling you get when you are physically switch the page over. sort of a feeling of anticipation, and regret at the same time. i am find that the photos that just don't feel like the month in the title are hard to vote for challenge relevance wise. even though anything should go for the most part.
this is in the back of mind, and affecting my votes after about 5 or 6 images. then i have to stop for a while, and come back. normally i can vote about 25-30 before steppping away for a bit.
just my thoughts on this challenge.

Image: "November"
Photographer: Scalvert and Frumoaznicul
Comment: At first glance, I thought "What sort of demented person would beat a horse to death, arrange some leaves around it, and put it in a calendar?" But now, after looking into it more deeply... well, I still feel the same way. The image is just too lifeless for my tastes. It seems dull, unfestive, and macabre. My first advice would've been to not photograph the dead horse at all, but seeing as that's not an option, I recomend that you tie this into November more... there's leaves in October too. First off, find some pilgrims, have them poking the dead horse with a pitchfork (a la American Gothic). This would add more life to your picture. Also, I feel that perhaps a random splaying of 4 or 5 Turkeys and an assortment of pumpkins would add to the novemberness. But don't carve the pumpkins. Then I'd have to mark you down; carving pumpkins in november is taboo.
You could've also tied the subject into other months as well. For instance, get rid of the pumpkins and turkeys, replace the pilgrims with santa, and put a santa hat on the dead horse. December! Or, relocate the horse to the beach and build a sandcastle by it. July! And those are just coming off the top of my head.
Technically, the image is good. Good contrast, lighting, sharpness, and color. My only complaint is composition. Aside from the fact that there's a dead horse straight in the middle of your picture (!!!), the leaves look way too artificially done. You should've at least let them fall in a natural way. There's buildups greater in some places than others that would not happen naturally.
Score: Well, I guess you were creative. I don't know how much of a good thing that was, but it still earns you some points. Granted, you lost a bunch on taking a picture of a freakin', freakin dead horse! Who does that, seriously! But nobody else did it, so that earns you a 4. Congratulations, you sick, sick person.

I think the photo that I entered will seem a little strange for a calendar, but after you get to read what I wrote about it, then it makes sense. I used leaves, but I forgot the horse :-)

again i think most people are judging on the merit of the photo itself, and not on if it 'met the challenge' or not. Which is becoming a pretty common trait. IMHO there is a fine line in this challenge. I chose what I thought they meant, and it's suffering. Others chose the complete opposite road and will do better. I think this is another wide open challenge as there are countless styles of calenders. It's really hard to judge a 'holiday' shot for a month, and a 'landscape' shot for a month when they both encompass their respective ideas. It would be less confusing if there were some kind of subcatagory, holiday, landscape etc. I am trying not to think about it too much as I've already had way to many unhelpful judgements about my model.

MagicShutter -
This was my first challenge, so I wanted to do something that looked sort of commercial, a calendar that would be given to you from a company. I think the composition and subject is pretty weird. I wanted it to stand out from landscapes. I am not doing that great with scores, but I like the photo :-) (I think the photo is lost in translation) ;-)
