She DID put in 3 years on the United States Court of Appeals before being appointed to the Supreme Court and she IS an acknowledged, brilliant scholar of the law. I don't care for her positions, obviously, but as far as qualifications go she's pretty well-qualified compared to some of Justices that have sat at the highest bench.
Check out James Clark McReynolds :-)
Originally posted by Ian Millhiser: McReynolds was, in Time magazine’s words, “a savagely sarcastic, incredibly reactionary Puritan anti-Semite.†McReynolds was lazy. He often would not even open the briefs lawyers filed to prepare him to hear a case until hours before the case was argued, and he frequently spent just a few hours crafting opinions that would govern all other courts in the country. McReynolds was nasty. He labeled President Franklin Roosevelt “that crippled son-of-a-bitch . . . in the White House,†and shunned his own nephew after the boy woke him up by playing jazz music on the radio. McReynolds was a petty tyrant. He ordered his staff never to smoke tobacco even on their free time, and dictated where they were allowed to live. During his frequent duck hunting trips, Justice McReynolds would bring along his longtime servant Harry Parker, and he would order Parker to wade through ice-cold water to retrieve the fallen animals in lieu of a bird dog. Though the two men often saw eye to eye on the Constitution, [Chief Justice] Taft dismissed McReynolds as “inconsiderate of his colleagues and others, and contemptuous of everyone†after serving on the same bench with him.
And, above all, Justice McReynolds was a bigot. He refused to speak to Justice Louis Brandeis for Brandeis̢۪s first three years on the Court because Brandeis was Jewish, and he forbade contact between his staff and the Jewish Justices Brandeis and Benjamin Cardozo. There is no official photograph of the justices for 1924 because the Court̢۪s seniority-based seating chart required McReynolds to sit next to Brandeis, and McReynolds simply refused to be photographed next to his Jewish colleague. When Brandeis offered his views in conferences, McReynolds would simply stand up and leave.
On the rare occasions when a woman argued a case before McReynolds’s Court, the justice would exclaim “I see the female is here†and walk out of the Courtroom. When Charles Hamilton Houston, the Harvard-educated black attorney who mentored future Justice Thurgood Marshall as Dean of the Howard Law School, argued before the Supreme Court in 1938, McReynolds turned his back on the Courtroom to signal his disapproval. McReynolds once warned one of his law clerks, who had grown close with Harry Parker, that the clerk “seem[ed] to forget that [Parker] is a negro.†He advised the clerk to “think of my wishes in this matter in your future relations with the darkies.â€
McReynolds was, sadly, one of many justices who joined opinions striking down child labor laws or a minimum wage, and he was only one of the “Four Horsemen†who resisted the New Deal during President Franklin Roosevelt’s first two terms in office. But no justice carried more vitriol or self-absorbed hatred to the bench than Justice McReynolds. |

It has been stated that she was the least qualified person ever appointed to this level of the Judiciary. I found the following a rather telling assessment of her capabilities Background in law
Can't say that I am a big fan of the decision rendered in this nomination.

At least the SCOTUS seems to have heard enough from the most recent ex-President ... hello New York Grand Jury ...
Which reminds me, nobody seems to have mentioned in addition to the other faults listed Rush is a convicted felon for illegal use of opioids -- just more evidence of the pathological hypocrisy of the Right (sic) wingers ...

I read with great interest this Rush Rant and, though I'm not sure why, found it mind-blowing that anyone here could either find anything nice to say about him, that it's somehow mean to "dishonor" his dead self by telling the truth about him, or that we should "let him go" and move on when his decades-long career of spreading as much hate and division as he could helped to damage our country almost beyond repair. ALMOST.
I lived with MAGA/Tea Party/Trump Supporter for 17 years. A sweet, warm, wonderful and educated man (a career photojournalist) who is simply unable/unwilling to drop his fears, need for belonging...all the usual "symptoms" of a cult follower. He's not as far gone as some, but to disbelieve what he watched in real time and to grasp on to the conspiracy theories despite all logical, factual data to the contrary...is jaw-dropping and devastating when you care for someone. And, yes...he is a HUGE Rush fan and called his death a "tragedy".
Like most of us, I've been unhealthily engaged in the rhetoric of our political nightmare of the last 4-5 years, forced to watch a monster try to tear us apart, to exploit those who trust him most. Rush et al basked in the opportunity to hop aboard the Trump Train and had I had an opportunity to take his photo, I would've definitely done that, just as I attended a Trump Rally to take photos, but also to see if I could somehow "understand" anything desirable about exploitation, willful ignorance and blind devotion to a monster. It turned out to be one of the most fascinating and terrifying experiences of my life. I won't bore you with it here. If you're interested, just let me know and I'll be more than happy to expound.
Thanks for reading this far. A few years ago, I "got into it" with a few of you on the subject of Gun Control, which I'm adamant about. I've regretted the vitriol that resulted, so haven't been active on these threads since then. It felt good to unload a bit just now.
I'll leave you with this quote from Mark Twain in re the death of Rush Effin' Limbaugh (with which I wholeheartedly concur):
"I have never wished death on any man, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."

I think you should write up your experience as an essay. You could shop it around or simply post it on Medium.com or a similar site, or even a public post on Facebook. I would read it. |

To me, the measure of a person can be determined in part by how they can vehemently disagree with someone, yet have it be the stance rather than the person themself.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe you taught me that through that very thread to which you refer.
I had to change my opinion of your stance and character/persona and I was glad that I did.
Nice to see you here.

I wrote up my experience the day after the rally! I've been fiddling with .pdfs and .htmls and not sure either will appear in a message to you guys. Sorry to be such an idiot. It's saved as a .pdf, but from my own files. Will you be able to see it? Would it be a problem to just copy and paste it here?

That link definitely won't work.
It points to a local folder on your machine.
You'll need to put somewhere shared access. |

Yes, I can relate to that. My husband would not hurt a fly nor wish anything bad to anyone but when he read that Trump got Covid he screamed with joy, so did I, we both felt a bit ashamed but we really hoped he'll be gone forever, we still do. |

I'm actually one of those people who believe people are fundamentally good, I believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and I believe that I'm no better than the next guy..... In basic principle.
But there are people who just go screaming so far over the line that they rattle the snot out of all that for me. ESPECIALLY when they cause undue pain and suffering onto otheres....and with no remorse.
So where is that line in the sand?
Going back to a mention I made about Ted Kennedy, I was pretty surprised to see how he was awarded such high regard for his activities over the years. Especially considering his background, for him to have avoided dealing with that situuation at the time, he ran and hid. "Supposedly" he went back with others to try and recover her, but that's just his explanation. He knew as well as anyone that his responsibility, regardless of the consequences, was to contact the authorities immediately. That he didn't means that there had to have been a good reason not to that 12 hours would defray......like to dry out, and/or firm up a story. You can say my theory can't be proven, and I'll give you that, but....... He couldn't, and nobody can, disprove how it looked, and that he did the wrong thing initially.
The Kopechne family had to live with this cloud over their daughter's death forever.
I've known people who have accidently created pain and suffering for others, but they're accepted responsibility for it regardless of consequence. You have to do so in a decent society.

Thanks everyone, for your help. I DO have Google docs, just never tried to share before. {{ derp }} Here's my "essay" of my first (and last) Trump experience. Hopefully, there will be no problems. (photos of the even on request)

The link worked for me too ... some older browsers will have a problem connecting to "secure" sites (https://...) -- you might try a different browser than your usual ... |
