| I give two or three 10s per challenge. They are the two to three photos that I feel clearly stand above the rest in that particular challenge. |

| For the first few times I voted, I didn't give out any 10s. I thought that I should only give a photo a ten if it was "perfect." After reading through the voting threads on the site and listening to the other members, I thought my previous voting style was too harsh. Now, when I encounter a photo that is good technically, meets the challenge topic, and is well composed, I give it a ten. On average, I'd say I give out 4 to 6 tens in a challenge. On the flip side, I've never given anyone a 1. And to date, I think I've only given 1 or 2 twos. For me to give a score that low, it has to be something barely recognizable and technically poor. I'm still surprised by the fact that some voters give well composed, technically sound photos 1s and 2s. |

How would you like it if your photo deserved a 10, but by the time someone got around to voting on yours they had already given out "their one 10", and they looked at yours and thought, well, it's a 10, but I've already given that out, and I've given out all the 9's I want to, this will just have to get an 8, or maybe a 7. NOPE-if it deserves a 10, it's going to get a 10 from me. |
You know, there are nicer ways to make your point. And that's not the thought process I use at all.
Just another reminder for me to stay out of the forums. |
??? I wasn't directing this comment to you, or to anyone is particular; it was just an observation about "rationing" 10's :)
I do not like to be rude or hurtful, and I have re-read my original post, but I don't see anything inappropriate, rude, or hurtful about my original comment, and am sorry that you took it that way, that was certainly not the intention.

Geez, I thought each entry was to be voted on its own merit, NOT as compared to the others in the challenge. This would, in effect, compare it to "every picture ever taken" (or viewed) by the voter.
I don't recall giving any 10s, yet I don't recall giving any 1s, either. I think it's time that I expand my "two-to-nine" rating system to use all the possibilities.

You can *think* any way you like. That's the beauty of the system. Not a thousand forum posts need change how you go around the business of voting. |

Thanks for clearing that up, Linda. I'm a true meloncholic (sp?)and I think every critical comment is directed at me :-) As someone else in the thread has said, listening to everyone else here has made me rethink my voting method, too. It will surely make it a lot easier in the OFS! There were so many good ones.

No problem, Di; I'm glad you saw my second post.
Don't let all the constant talk about ways of voting worry you. Like Koriyama said, you can vote any way you like.
I've always liked to see the comments on how people vote because it gives me insight into others voting methods, and makes me examine my own voting methods, and think about whether I might be being closed-minded on a particular subject or issue. I vote largely on emotion, and for me, that works. Do whatever is comfortable and intuitive for you, and have fun.

When I first started here I noticed that the winning pictures usually have an average of 7 or 8, so I used 4 as an average score. After about a month of voting and reading the forums, I changed it to a 5 or 6 for an average photo (IMO this means a technically good photo that holds no appeal to me as a viewer). But I did and still do give 10's, usually at least my 3 favorites for the challenge - sometimes more. I am way too cheap to use the "it only gets a ten if I would buy it" that some people use. I just started a new job and haven't voted/submitted for a few weeks, but my voting usually goes like this: I go through all the pictures (I won't vote unless I can vote on all the pictures submitted for that challenge) and I think "regarding this challenge, how well do I like this photo". For example, if the challenge was "Ugly" and someone submitted a beautiful picture of a perfect rose it would get a low score, even if I liked the picture enough to buy it. Same would go for a challenge called "Beautiful" and picure of cow pies. As for voting each picture on its own merit, well I try. I would like to use the vanishing point challenge for this example. There were a least a dozen pictures that used railroad tracks and I will admit to voting a few a them lower because I felt that one or two were better done. And to tell the truth I don't feel bad about it. After all, isn't that what this site is about? We all enter pictures with a similar theme (whatever the challenge is) and we vote to pick the best of the bunch (in our opinions), and the winner is the person who photo got the highest average.

have you ever given a 10 to some pictures and to which/what pictures?

a 10 means that a shot is good (see rules). So by this it seems that you have not perceived any shot on dpc as a good shot?
I have given LOTS of 10's bc there are A LOT in MY OPINION that are really good shots. There have only been a fwe challenges (i think 1 or 2) that I did not frop at least one 10.
YEesterday, I was looking thru some profiles & stumbled upon several people whose average vote was around the 3.0 to 4.0 range. This seems so crazy to me. I know, I know, everyone votes as they see fit & I hear that but come on, ave vote 3-4? These folks, mind you, from being here almost a year now, are the ones the bitch most about how much they are under appreciated & under rated. Karma eh?
Any way, I would like to hear more about why you have not voted a 10 yet more than knowing that you just haven't. What is a 10 shot for you?
Thanks & peace
