interestingly enough, I thought my current entry for 'music' would have done a lot better. i'm at 5.33 at the moment.

the comments suggest the score should be higher, however. it's funny.. some of the comments say 'nice work! 5' or 'well done.. original.. 6' ?

5 is nice work?

5 is nice work, translated: nothing really wrong technically, but nothing too interesting visually. That's a "nice work, 5" to me.

ah, i see.

perhaps we should split our comments into technical/artistic scores for clarification so we know where we're lacking.

If all of the voters use the full scale available (1 - 10), then a 5.5 should be average.

I've seen entries ranked 4.something, which I considered excellent work. Others came in at 7.something, which I had ranked 3.

A five, if it came from me, would be a 'good' photo by most standards; one that communicates capably without teaching or exhilarating us; an artistically interesting photo pointing an unusual view, perspective or matter, even if it suffers from distinct technical 'flaws'; a technically 'stunning' capture with limiting human or artistic 'range'.

i must produce a lot of 'nice work' then ;}
i have racked up quite a few 5 votes over 40 challenges...

Be grateful you got a 5 with a comment. Better than a 2, 3 or 4 with no comment. 5 is the medium and it is used different by different voters. In general 5 means photo is okay or concept good, but not pushing the wow factor.

Very rare for me to give much above 7 or much below 4, only the cream and the crud fall outside this band.

No wonder the scores come in so low. To me 5 say sub-average. Because, 5.5 is average. I think a 6 is a fairer number for a technically sound photo that meets the challenge but is lacking umph. If it is technically sound and meets the challenge, shouldn't it be at least average????

I feel, a finer gradation of the scale above 5 addresses work which is appreciably useful in terms of providing insight of what a 'good' photograph actually is. A greater involvement with such work, inevitably, is more useful for a photographer interested in growth and improvement than work which does not inspire imitation, admiration or transport.

I agree that is the way it should be. In reality, I know outspoken voters who will place a good image at 1 or 2 because the subject does not appeal to them. The system is not fair, but what we must live with. I know many superb images that are below 6.

I agree completely! There is too much marking down for no reason.

Different votes have different voting styles. You can see that by going to user profiles and looking at there voting averages. I have seen some have a voting average as low as 3+ and some have voting averages as high as 6+. That does not make the person that votes high or low any better than the other. Some people just donĂ¢€™t use the 1-10 scale all the time. Unfortunately if the low or high votes does not vote on all the entries in a challenge it effects the photographs average score more than if the did vote on 100% of the entries. I could give examples but I think people know that. I have a simple scale I vote by:
Below Average: 1-3
Average: 4-5
Good: 6-7
Great: 8-9
Excellent: 10

Then I deduct if the picture does not meet the challenge. Of course meeting the challenge is an interpretation so I am very careful on how much I deduct.
