Hi there, I am new to FLASH photography although I have been doing SLR photography for 13 years. I have always used the in-camera flash. Anyhow, I just got my Canon 580ex Speedlight and looking at it scares me a little. What do I do with it?!

Do any of you know any good websites that have lessons and examples and suggestions for getting used to Flash photography with the Canon flashes or even just external flashes. Now that my flash has come in, I want to dive right in, but it's overwhelming. I could use some basic guidance :)

It's long (divided into 3 parts) and detailed, but it is very worthwhile to really sit down and comprehend the stuff talked about in Flash Photography with Canon EOS Cameras.

Thanks for that link EddyG! I am buying a 550ex this weekend, and am certain that I will find myself equally as nervous about using the darned thing.

At Art Center? Yes, there are... visit //www.artcenter.edu for more info. There are some admin positions and some management :)

Back to the Canon 580, has anyone experienced battery life of under 1 hour? I use monster rechargable batteries, and they lasted about 40 minutes while taking photos for a local band. I got about 50 firings or so, maybe less. Perhaps my monsters are getting old?

yes mirodonamy i thinks very hard that maybe you're battery is maybe not yet charged in a fully manner or maybe perhaps it is very possilbe to changing time for swap out aged battery rechargables. i am using currently nonrechargeable types of batteries but they are definitely the 'industrial' battery type style from duracel special brand kind. on photo show at night style clubbing show i was able to use fully 580ex of 4gb of photo types .raw style which is maybe around 400 .raw style photographies digital but i must mention that at around 375 recharge draw of flashingunit was getting very slow to be able to shooting again, you know? and becausing i'm not using flash for all shootings maybe i used for about 350photos i turn off flash when not needed in usage so maybe that can helping, and i do not using majorcontinuous shooting style of flash to because that is just much too naughty for flash! :0

Lesson:

Screw flash onto hot shoe.

Turn on battery pack (if applicable).

Turn on camera.

Shoot.

:-)

the 580ex (like the 550)will pretty much run itself if you want it to...

I just bought the 580ex last Monday, and took pics at church on Sunday and the batts only lasted about an hour, maybe a little less! Hate to think I have to carry a ton of batteries around with me to keep up with it.
