I'm a little disheartened with my results so far, Is it my style and approach c**p. I hink my conception of the challenges may be at fault and should I be more simplistic, I thik I have a reasonable one for macro but we'll see any input or help appreciated. I seem to get a large number of 1 & 2 scores.

G'day Nick
Its all about learning, learning what the dpc voters want to see is a big part of that. I have many photos of mine that I like because it achieved the shot I was trying to get, that does not necessarily mean a good score it simply means I learnt how to get that type of shot/effect..

Kia ora, Mate I was just doing a little soul searching, I did vote and comment on all the ['Poverty" challenge and wondered if I had upset anyone and got a bit of the revenge voting but since things are anonymous that is only an outsider.

hi Nick. You've got some really interesting images in your challenge entries.
Look at the creative imagination, the detail with this image

The expression, the focus.....that adorably soft look you've captured with this beauty.

The rich colours, focus, dof and the composition with this beauty

Don't get disheartened......as Bob says it's about learning, getting out there and taking photos, trying new things. That's what the challenges do for me (and I've had some really 'interesting' entries :P) I found that posting images for critique really helped too.

I'm pretty new to DPC, but here's what I see in a few of the pics on your profile...

The flying banana is great, I would give it a 7 or 8. It is a little too dark, but I think you met the intent very well.

The cows pic had a great picture of the cows and a great framing device, but the cows were so small and far away that the framing didn't really complement the picture. Framing should in general be reserved for things that are few in number and easier to see. A frame should focus your attention on those few things and help remove other distractions. Your framed picture of cows in a field was still just cows in a field. If your frame captured just one or two cows and the cows filled out the space more than the field, I think you would have had better results.

The soft dog pic was a great pic of the dog, but a problem I think you might have had is that you used the title to make the connection between the dog and softness, rather than having a picture that communicated it. You might on some level have realized that. Even though the dog is soft we see so many pictures of dogs, softness is not the immediate reaction. We think of the dog's personality or its actions. To communicate softness, having someone touch the dog might have been more compelling.

Overall, I agree with your assessment of yourself. Be more simplistic and pay attengion to the challenge. I made this mistake with my Bizarre Nature pic. It isn't as Bizarre as I once thought it was, but live and learn. I wouldn't worry about your macro too much. The challenge is very basic, and your a good photographer. As long as you stay away from bugs and flowers you should do well.

Nick,
Hi how are you doing? I just wanted to say don’t get dishearten about your scores. Like bob [Gurilla] said its all about learning. I would love to see my scores higher but I have a lot to learn as well. I looked over you photos and they’re not bad. Some of them may have suffered because of the challenge and some voters may have thought you did not meet the challenge. I looked at the pictures I voted on and I voted above your average on all of them but one. This site lets voters vote they way they feel is right, but you have to keep in mind they may be wrong. That’s why you see ‘blue ribbon’ winning photos with 1,2, and 3’s sometimes. Keep shooting those pictures and reading the comments your receive, and it will help you learn what voters are looking for.
