Got a comment one time on my photo, nice composition but blah blah and he/she voted me a 1, I could tell because I was refresshing every minute or so.

Turns out he/she had a similar shot in the challenge and he/she wasn't doing so well...

I was realy mad but decided NOT to PM and leave it at that. I finaly score way higher then that person so I didn't think it was a problem anymore.

Some people do just strange things.

Be careful. You can't always tell what the commenter voted, even if you are refreshing every minute. For example, I typically don't vote and comment at the same time. I vote, then I go back and comment.

Even when I comment while voting, I often do it disjointly, because I dislike the possibility that someone can associate my comment with a vote--even if it is good. The points voting is supposed to be anonymous.

But I hadn't thought about the converse until recently. Someone gets my comment at the same time someone else just gives them a 1, 2 or 3. And they think I did it! When all I did was go back and comment. (For that reason, this time, during the OFS, I have been voting and commenting at the same time. But I still will go back and add comments to some that I already voted on, so I am "still at risk of misinterpretation".

So please don't jump to conclusions!!!!

You probably commented on mine... I am amazed at how many times my score plummets down because of people giving ones. It may not be to everybody's taste... but it's a good photo, why give ones? Ah well!

Sorry, under any circumstances, you are not supposed to trash people in the forums. And trashing someone's comment discourages others from speaking their minds. (Not judging content--I stopped reading your message when you first started trashing someone.)

I also vote and comment separately. Please be careful making these assumptions.

It was in the first few hours of our big race :-)
I wasn't completely sure until I saw the other once entry...
And I did nothing, just wonder why.

I must admit that when I just started out here I have done the same one time. Scoring lower then expected and then scoring the real good ones low. (sorry everybody) but in the end it is yourself who you are fooling.

So now I vote what comes to mind... Do it fair, but not always as the masses.
The only time I picked the winner was in the June free study (Heida) and Librodo's blue ribbon.

"hey ARTICLE 19 untill you have to courage to participate yourself in challenges, why do you refrain from shitting all over other peoples work...you have to guts to shit on people, why don't you have the guts to show how much more talented you are than everyone else....but your probably way above petty challenges..."

Sorry everyone.

I just commented on the pic I believe to be your - I wonder if I'm right

hehehe Colda, you picked wrong! but that's ok, I really won't mind if someone decides my shot is not good, it's the way these things go, BUT I do mind jerks like ARTICLE 19 who just trashes everything to make himself feel precious....I've been reading some of his posts, and it's the same thing...he's a demi-god. I just wonder why people will actualy pay to join a challenge based website...and not join in the challenges...but rather just make idiotic coments, with no basis in photography... Tell my the compo sucks, tell me the lighting is bad...I'll respect that, even if I do not agree...but saying something like "possibly the worst photograph ever conceived or taken." where and how can this be helpful??

and now? - I'm pretty sure I have it this time :)

If it was yours I commented on in the last few mins, and guessing your style it was not the one that I thought was Gil's, but if I'm right it is one that I scored 9 :)

Mine is pretty low too, compared to my average entry. I'm getting a 4.6. I don't know if it's lower than it should be, or it's just not a great photo. I've gotten two comments and they both criticized the same thing so they're probably onto something that I just didn't see when I entered it. I still have a very difficult time critiquing my own work. I still like the photo, it's what I saw when I was there. S'ok. I don't stress too much over scores here anymore. It's all in good fun to me.

Your absolutly right...but it's ok for someone to make Trashy comments when "judging" your work? how is comment like this supposed to be helpul? why would someone be allowed to say that a image is "shit" ?? or say something like "possibly the worst photograph ever conceived or taken.".... how is this constructive in any way?? why would a total like of respect and curtousy warrant anything else than the same?

Ah yes, I've spotted it. May not be to everybody's taste, but hardly deserving of such an outburst.

On dpc voters are simply people with an interest in photography, they are a good representation of how the general public view our work. Unfortunatly many people allow personal tastes, political bias, nationalistic views etc to be included in their vote. Rather than voting on the pic for what the pic is, they vote on the pic by how it makes them feel, thus when they see a photo that 'moves' them, in many cases this has a negative effect on the vote rather than a justified positive effect.

It's wrong, but that's the way it is.

exactamundo! I really don't mind getting a 1 if the person justifies it...I'd love a 10 too... But a comment like this is just made to insult.

You can't stop it. And trashing the person in public isn't the solution. Report them to the admins and site council. If they agree they are out of line, I believe they can toss their votes or delete their critiques, or terminate their membership.

I do believe it would be good to have a way to flag critiques for site council review (as long as it's not abused).

Colda, I am well aware of this...but after reading other posts/comments from this person, I came to the conclusion that these comments are just made to insult and infuriate....and it works.

I have been for some time.

Anyway, that's been recitified, and Neil, you're now on my favourites list.

Why? Last night, I browsed through my statistically favourite photographers and found you there.

For newbies, you can see who you 'really' like (that is, what average score you dish out to each) by clicking on >'my favourites' >manage your favourites >view your statistically favourite photographers.

You might get a shock.

Agreed, I still get miffed when I think of one voter that openly gave me a one and said "would give it a zero if i could".

There's simply no need for such comments

Don't let it get to you. It's just one opinion, and fairly worthless given that person's other comments. If a wild man in a pink tutu and a straightjacket ran up to you and called you crazy, would you bother arguing the point?

Great photography is the best revenge for bad comments. When the challenge is over and your image finishes in the top 10 or 20, then a comment like this will stick out as a glaring embarrassment to the person who made it.

Such is the path I've taken, it's just the doing 'great photography' that is proving to be a bit of a hurdle ;)

Thanx, you really put it in perspective for me....and it woke me up. End-O-Story.

I'm very glad to have said that--especially since the "potential problem" I discussed was evidently a real problem! Maybe I should end my critiques with "This critique was sent separately from any score. Any temporal association with a score is purely coincidental." ;-)

And thanks for adding me to your favorites. To me that's greater reward than a ribbon (well, three ribbons would be nice too, then I could participate in "impressionism" ... ;-) )

You're welcome, or, you're there because you've earned it. I'd love 3 ribbons, too.

Ahhhh the wondeful nature of internet message boards. The comment, as far as I am concerned, was wholy justified and since it is my comment then I am more than entitled to make it.

The photgraph in question is, again as far as I am concerned, hideous and without merit, if you don't want people to comment then don't put the image here for others to see.

Is it helpful? yes if you take the comment on board and refrain from taking pictures like that.

Now if you wouldn't mind running along and voting (if you're American) then the rest of the world would be very gratefull as long as you vote for the other guy!

tootles.

It would only have been helpful if you explained your opinion. What do you mean, taking pictures 'like that'? That is the part that you need to explain in order to be of any help with that comment...

Way to go to automatically alienate half the people.

45 votes for a very low average vote of 3.11 - pretty critical. Can't wait to see your photo when you get around to entering a challenge. With such a discerning eye it should be pretty good.
