I became a member last night around 10:00pm only 2 hours before the October Free Study ended. I had no idea that I would be able to participate so I tried to get a photo ready for it. I submitted it then un-submitted it, what do you think of it or how it would of done? I learning and would like some constructive comments please.

Although I would like to say it's always better to submit to get feedback, on this site that's just not true. The way the challenges work IMHO you really need to have your ducks in a row before you submit.

In this case, I don't think this would have done well as is. I think there are several things you could have done to improve it (my opinion only, of course).

To me, this is a good base for an impressionistic photo (yes, that's another thread). Here's what I would do:

1) You could crop the top--the sky peeking through is distracting. I would go for the top 1/5 or so.
2) Fix the overexposed areas on the trunk using levels
3) Experiment with softening this a little, if you want to go impressionistic.

The centered composition still weakens it a bit, but doing the above would have improved its score, IMHO.

I will tell you this much - I think it is an image that really makes you look and think. My first impression as it was loading was too peculiar of drawn out lines in the foliage. As more of the image became apparent to me, I really started being drawn to it. I am a tree lover and like "effects", so I would score it higher than many. I agree with nshapiro's comments and with some work along those lines, it would be a real winner for me. As it appears now, I don't honestly think you would have scored high in the open challenge. I hope our comments help you and give you some ideas to go with.
