I am sure i am going open a whole can of worms here, but i just have to say that i think there should be a lot more basic editing challenges, or even straight out of camera challenges and only a few advanced editing ones.

Anyone can do photoshop "magic", more or less, not everyone can make a picture in camera. Besides, this site is supposed to be about photography, not image processing.

There.

I can agree on the basic editing issue but not out of camera. Problem with digital is that it demands some image processing just as film reqires some darkroom work. Digital even more so I would think.

Yeah, that was an exaggeration (sp?). What i mean is that we need more challenges requiring creativity while making the shot, not while doing post processing.

i think it would be cool to do a straight out of the camera challenge, once though. just for a single challenge.

More basic challenges sounds like a great idea -- far too much PS being done as it is.

There was one 'out of the can' challenge, "The Past".

Please recognize that not all digital images require editing. Some, perhaps relatively few, and it depends on what type of camera, can stand on there own as they are from the cam. Otherwise the concept of Pictbridge, and similiar direct camera-to-printer technologies would not be commercially viable.

So who all would set their camera to take the photo in 640x480 (and presumably a full size for prints if needed)?

I've been meaning to try this anyway just to see how the camera does for quality.

For The Past challenge the only manipulations allowed were resize and rotate.

Well if you shot in 640x480, you wouldn't even need to resize, which could potentially render a better image.

Resizing and rotating, whether done automatically or by manually, fall more into the realm of processing than under the term editing. Editing connotes a human making judgements that materially change the appearance of an image. Most images stand to gain from editing but occasionally there will be one that is fine with only the processing done by the camera's firmware and/or automated printing procedures.
