I just joined DPC... a solid 20 minutes ago and I was reading through their disclaimer information, and I am not too good with those legal things and like. So here is my question: when we post pictures for selling (I think we can do that here...) or post them for a contest DPC doesn't allow us to post any type of copyright info on them (not that I would know how to protect my images, which is something I need to learn hwo to do) but it seems as though DPC gets rights to my pictures. I do hope that I am wrong, because I was hoping to make a little money off of my photography addiction. So let me know how or what I am doing wrong in thought here... Any comments welcome! Thanks

Welcome to the assylum.

Here's a quote from the fine print at the bottom of every site page:

***All digital photo copyrights belong to the photographers and may not be used without permission. ***

As far as selling prints, you have to be a paying member to do that. A copyright notice can be put on the printable images up for sale.

Registered users can only participate in the open challenges.

You cant put copyright information on the actual image that are submitted into contests. DPC has anonymous voting and having people's names on an image removes that anonymity. You can include a copyright line on images that will be used on DPC Prints. You will need to become a paying member (25 USD a year) in order to sell photographs via DPC Prints. If you havent already you should look through the help files over there to learn more about those services. I believe DPC owns the right to post the image on the website and that is all, you can still sell and post the images anywhere else.

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will point it out. Welcome to DPC.

This is substantially correct. I think DPC can also use images on "promotional materials" such as a card, Tshirt, or magazine ad, but as a practical matter I am pretty sure that the site admins will ask permission before actually doing anything along that line. They'd probably put your photo credit and copyright notice on it too.

Thanks for the replies, so it turns out I am not completely wrong, but a little hasty with the property rights thing.

One more question... what do they need to request the original file for? I noticed that in the rules section, is that for authenticity purposes? That would be my guess, and I suppose the same rules apply about it being my property and the like if they do request an image.

Correct... if your original is requested, it is to verify the the image complies with the rules. That's all it's ever used for, and it is never posted publicly.

mkull. We request the original file is the validity of your shot comes into question, or if you are in the top 5. The reason being is that we are a time frame kind of challenge. Which mean that the photos need to be taken within the time frame alloted. In order to prove that, we must see the original file from the camera with EXIF intact. Also, it proves that you did not edit the photo beyond the limits of that particular challenge. Has helped us to catch a lot of cheaters, and also honest mistakes. We're good people, we're not going to screw with your images. :) promise.
