Found a Raw Photo viewer for Gimp. Was interested to try it out, but my current camera does not shoot RAW. ANyone know where I could find one to play with?

Do you mean RawPhoto? I use it and yes, it works great.

There are some sample NEF files on the dpreview d1x review.

Try this NEF raw file from my D70.

Collin, I appreciate that, but it won't let me access it. Forbidden to access/ error 404 when I try

edit: I hadn't realized there were so many ways to sleep on a coach bus :)

edit: much appreciated Collin. Nice pic

neat little tool. Now, if only GIMP worked in 16-bit mode.

How very strange. I hope you don't mind, but I tried downloading the nef file as well -- but every time I tried there was something on my system converting it to a tif file. It is a 5 MB tif slightly larger than a thumbnail, and renaming the file doesn't help.

Having never touched an nef file before I don't know if this is the expected behavior or not -- but I would expect not.

Actually, NEF files _are_ TIFF files. TIFF is just a container format, and Nikon uses it to organize the metadata, thumbnail, and actual raw image data. Programs that can read TIFF files can therefore read the thumbnail from the NEF file. Of course, only programs that understand the D70 RAW data format can actually read the full image data, but the thumbnail, which is a JPEG, was created by the camera.

So you need a raw conversion program that supports NEF files to view the image.

ok, it through me for a loop when I the file I see is available has an nef extension, but the one I download had a tif.
