I thought my work was improving, and my challenge scores had been showing improvement gradually as well, but I have officially hit rock bottom with school days and now implied lines and poverty. I don't really know what to attribute it to. I can't say that I have been overly inspired by the last few challenges, maybe that is affecting things for me, but I wonder if scoring has just been a little flat as well considering the lower scores in the top three. I am very excited about my entry for the open challenge, but a bit apprehensive as well considering my recent trend. Is anyone else in the same boat?

It depends on the challenge. If you go through the challenges you've entered and look at the type of challenge it is and your score you should see a trend. When challenges are more open and involve less interpretation by the viewer then the scores are usually a little higher. On conceptual or abstract challenges where it is trying to portray a feeling or an interpretation of a subject then scores tend to be lower. So something like 'blue' or 'pencil' will score higher than 'poverty' as there is less to interpret.

If you find you have to force an image to fit a challenge then it likely will not score too well. If you dont feel comfortable with the image dont enter it. There is no rule that you have to enter every single challenge. Enter the ones that appeal to you.

I, of course, know that I don't have to enter every challenge. However, I tend to look at participation here more like a taking a class. I feel a bit compelled to enter, to force myself to stretch my boundaries and not always shoot subjects that I am familiar and comfortable with.

I have never entered a shot I thought did not meet the challenge, but some have been interpreted that way. In School Days I took a picture of a local high school building and received comments about not seeing the connection???????

It is a rewarding learning experience, regardless of the scoring, but I just wondered if anyone else felt the scoring seemed a bit off lately. I think your interpretation of the differences in scoring is probably right on target. I hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks for your insight.

I used to try to enter every challenge, and my scores suffered as well. Now, if I don't have an idea that I think will score well, I don't enter. I find that I have more time to "train", like research, photo classes on line, etc. If I don't think has a chance of getting a 6, I won't bother. Quality, not quanity.

I dont think it even really matters about the score going into it. Although it's always nice and certainly a good ego stroking to get a 6+. If a challenge is uninspiring then usually that means you force an idea and a photograph. Sure it meets the challenge and sure you can enter it, but is it a good shot? Can you make a good image without inspiration? It's good to expand boundries and shoot things you wouldnt normally shoot and you can get personal growth from that. But if you work a subject or a theme and nothing comes out of it, no inspiration or feel good image then try again at another time. I think taking the best image out of a set that just happened is not always a good thing. Sometimes the viewer can see the inspiration in the shot, and if they did they usually score higher. Without that inspiration present in images it can often look like a dead fish.

Well I seem to have one inspiration (Free Study-Currently higher than my highest score) and three dead fish. Truely unwarranted horrible scores in Indecision, Bizarre Nature, and Music. My poor average.

I try to enter each challenge, cos it is after all, a challenge. Mostly I don't score well, but I am always on topic.

Poverty scored only 4.69, but I got a record 32 comments, most were sensible ones as well.

I feel that if I pick and choose challenges with a view to keeping my average high, then I am not really partaking in the essence of DPC. It is a challenge driven website, so enter and be damned!!
