Take the trip.

The lens is more of a psychological thing. Take the trip, BUT don't take all your expensive gear on it. If you can't afford to replace it when it's been stolen from your hostel, etc best not to bring it.

You do not say what lenses you have so far?

I have rented the Canon 100-400mm IS L series lens a number of times from my local Pro camera shop. I found I could get the shots I needed with the Tokina 80-400mm and save money to boot. The Aperture range is the same on both (At least the one I rented).

If you have a good assortment of lenses/glass I would take the trip and get the lens later.

I'd buy the glass. Each piece of gear in my bag has allowed me to realize at least one thing (and usually many more) that previously lived only in my memory or periphery. Now I have 6mp images that bring me exactly to where I was instead of fading memories. I've found more advantures within an hour of my home than knew existed. Yes, a world tour will show you experiences you'd otherwise miss, but that will last much less time than a lifetime of creation...

Figure out where you want to go and break the list into smaller trips over a few years instead of one bank-account depleting adventure. There's always a way to do both if you want it bad enough.

Traveling is extremely overrated, except for doing your own anthropologic study, which you would get more accurately out of a book. Traveling is like sitting in the fourth tier at a football game-- you can not see much, and it is far better on television.

Heck, you’re in the Navy. Haven’t you traveled enough? :)

Well, I guess you know I’m voting for the lens. Canon's EF 4.5-5.6 100-400mm USM L IS is awfully nice, with great snob appeal which would be enjoyable, too. It is affordable, but certainly not by me. Every time I am disappointed with my photo results, I blame it on the lens. It would be nice to have Canon L glass so I could eliminate my excuses.

But then, I wouldn’t trade my trip to Europe in 1981 for anything I could possibly think of.

Well, I guess we're all different. I'm well travelled and them more I do it the more intersted I get. For me travel is like a litte bug that bites you and you just cant get rid of it. The bite itches but the more you scratch the worse the itching gets. But then again, it's just not like that for everybody.
I'm happy to say that the lens has been ordered. Now I just have to book that ever elusive african safari to go with the lens!
