No...I don't mean it really sucks...that's just the name of the site. But the photos in there are superb. Mostly from Holgas. Gotta admit it makes me wanna run out and buy one. ;)

Enjoy!

As an owner of a Holga, all is can say is "ARRGH!! They're fiddly big buggers!!" :o) Seriously, they create amazing photos (as long as the light isn't leaking in too much), and they're incredibly lo-fi, but a complete pain to use sometimes... Not to mention that MF film costs the earth to have processed! But I like having it around, for those unusual shots you just can't emulate with digital.

Superb in what way? The non-realism of the colors or the burned edges? I'm not sure how those pics outperform digi? Maybe at 45x60 enlargements...

Go tell that to a Holga enthusiast. I was simply communicating my appreciation for the photographs in that collection.

I wouldn't say "superb", just really different. Holga's only have 2 f-stops (8 and 11), a plastic lens, lots of light leaks, a primitive focusing system, and the ability to do multiple exposures (or half multi exposures if you don't wind the film right), but they just give a unique look. I've found people either love 'em or hate 'em.

I'm waiting for the digital Holga's to come out. Any news?

After seeing a Polaroid back come out for it ( link ) I wouldn't be surprised if somebody made a digital back for it!

The story behind Digital Sucks seems to indicate that they are most concerned about digital's effect on the coincidental preservation of history. The idea is that a photo'd true worth (not talking $$ here) may not be realized for hundreds of years, and in that time it is unlikely that most digital media will survive. I see this point brought up often, although not recently on DPC.

On the flip side, I'd have to say that digital encourages more people to take pictures, which captures things that otherwise would not have been preserved. Let's face it - photoshop is more accessible than most darkrooms. If this phenomenon occurred on a large enough scale, there would be redundancy in societal history preservation that could wash out the digital evaporation effect.

In the end though, I don't worry too much about formats becoming obsolete, and media degenerating. It takes very little coding to include obsolete formats in digital file viewers, and JPEG has such ubiquity that I think it will always be supported in some capacity. Once another format takes over I think we'll see converters out there, just like we see many people drum scanning their negatives.

Anyone else pontificating on the digital future, and whether or not it will be preserved?

I didn't really understand that Holga's weren't "real" cameras in the way I think of a camera. They are unique for sure and interesting to look at - I thought they were supposed to be something "better" in a film vs. digital sort of way. My bad.
