Are really bad photos art? These guys seem to think so.

This isn't really meant to be one of those heavy 'art discussion' posts. Just wanted to share the site and concept.

*And* I was also thinkin'...wouldn't it be cool to share our really, really bad film pics? I'll post some later on when I get a chance to scan 'n post.

What's wrong with them? i thought they all displayed a true gift for Artistic photography. after all, this is art we are dealing with and i feel these pictures represent a POINT OF VIEW that is seldom seen by us so called professionals, yes we have a lot to learn from these wonderfull artists and i think the message for us from these 'WHAT DOES THIS BUTTON DO?' photographers is this-:

HEEEEEEEEEEELP MEEEEEEEEE!!!! *evil grin*

My brother is the same, give him a camera set up on a tripod he will still balls it up. My mother always took great pictures but of something else, I have some friends who should never be allowed to buy film again due to constant abuse.. be a good idea to post some here just for the laugh. god bless digital because we can now get rid of the BADDIES before anyone else sees them...

Reminds me of all the times I'd go pick up photos with friends and one of those pics would be inside. Or worse yet, one of *those* ;)

Why do we have to be such elitists about this?

I think the idea is brilliant. Rather than focusing on the intentional photograph, they are drawing focus to the unintentional... the unexpected forms that emerge when a photo is poorly framed... the glimps of SOME subject that wasn't THE subject... and in some cases a sense of the emotion of a moment, such as when a clumsy father botches a casual family photo, but nobody really cares. In a way, they are snapshots of life itself, rather than of life according to some particular photographer.

In a family photo album, these can be painful to look at, but presented as they are, collectively and removed from their original contexts, I find them very compelling, in the same way that a collage of magazine clippings can be more interesting than the original, more intentional materials.

I think they ARE very artistic, and I also think that we could take pictures like that and feel they are art, if they convery what we are trying to say..... a study of color, or form, or the like... i liked quite a lot of them.

I think the dificult thing with art, is recognizing it, or capturing what you MEAN to capture.... or composing it... or knowing what 'makes it work'... the modern art of scribbles, or just a few shapes on a page.. anyone can do as well... but at the same time.. everone can NOT do, cause they can't see or visualize what makes it look 'good'.. yeah blah blah blah

Very well put - I agree. Those images actually look very appealing as a collective, with charm and intrigue.

It's like that saying.... "Want to look thinner? Hang around fat people."

Naturally, those photos would look subpar against "normal" photos or fineart but when all those photos are put together, they all share a common bond and some sort of abstract randomness.
