Remember when you were a kid and got a new toy? You know the BRAND NEW toy that no one on the block had? What did ya do with it? Ya tested it. You knew very soon just what that toy would do. Then what did ya do. You played with it. And with a little imagination, you made that toy fit into your own little world...
Oh yeah, this is a photography site! Wanna tip that will make your photographs come out whole lot better? Play with photography. Get that little kid that's deep inside you out. Figure out what your toy will do! Than fit it into your own little world!
OK... Real world. What do I mean by play with photography? Grab a couple of house lights and little figurine or sculpture. Take a bunch of pictures moving the lights around oftenly! Get something that looks cool? Move your camera closer or farther away and zoom in/out. See any differences? Slide around your subject... Move up and down... You know... Play with it!
Then come's the hard part. Look at ALL the shot you just took. I'm sure you'll go eeeewwwww at a lot of them (remember when you were a kid you said eeeewwww all the time!) Figure out which ones suck, which ones are all most what you wanted to see, and once in a while one shot will make you say, 'WOW'!
That's the shot that makes it all worth while!

Agreed, last saturday I watched my son play football (soccer to the uneducated *grin*) and decided to play the law of averages (at least one shot in a hundred should be good), so I just took about 4-500 shots without thinking too much and sure enough I have a number of good one and a few that I'm very pleased with.
Don't think too much about it, just shoot it (many times) - after all we don't have to worry about film processing costs :) |

I took over 1700 images on a recent 23 day trip to Italy, trying to follow this train of thought the whole time. I ended up with mostly postcard garbage. But about 200-300 are near and dear to me. They are nearly all images I took when "acting a fool", with my wife rolling her eyes, and me losing significant blood circulation to one or more extremities. To be creative with photography, you have to get creative in how you see. This, above all, is an area I need to improve. |
