We would all like more feedback/comments on our photos right? so how can we get that without causing the voter to put in to much extra effort?

Maybe If we alter the way a vote is cast simply by using say 4 headings, and voting 1 - 5 in each of those area's. So that a vote for any one photo is an average of the 4 sections.

Example (tick boxes)
Technical .....................1 2 3 4 5
aesthetics ....................1 2 3 4 5
Challenge (meet) ..............1 2 3 4 5
D.O.F. (Degree of difficulty) 1 2 3 4 5
Score this photo ....(average)=
Comments area here

Your score on that photo would be the average of the 4 areas. At the end of the voting you can see a breakdown of the 4 areas which will give you some feedback and it would still allow people to comment.

What do you think, could this work, do others have any ideas that could improve voting/comments?

The way that my club votes internally on print competitions is to award marks for the following 4 categories:
Tecnhical
Composition
Appeal
Presentation

This is similar to the way in which your reasonong is going, isn't it?

In theory its a great idea, but when you are voting on over 250 images a week it becomes too time consuming to break it down like that. As it is, I don't have enough time to write all the comments that I would like to.

good idea but it's WAY more extra workn4 the voter than it is now

Not a new idea.

Good luck though.

When I vote I'm laid back in my desk chair sometimes with my feet up. I would think others are the same, clicking 4 times compared to 1 does not make a lot of difference I would not think and the Average should be totalled automatically!

The section titles can be decided on these were just my thoughts.
