A couple of people commented on my Communication entry that they'd like the foreground grass cropped; I left it to try and emphasize the "height" of the hill I was trying to simulate (tonite I'll post an overall view of the location).

Do people prefer the tall version or the square crop?

Original entry: Square crop:

In my view a square conveys something static most of the time. As opposed to a rectangular which conveys dynamism. With exceptions, of course.

I hope you don't mind my playing around with this a little. How about this type of crop/extend ?

Original entry: Square crop:

Both crops give a sense of height ... the first because the boy is smaller (i.e. farther away) and near the top of the image; and the second because the grass occupies just the bottom edge of the photo. The diagonal comp of the square image is harder to pull off but feels okay to me in this case. Both are good and I don't have a strong preference for one over the other.

I have thought about a verticle vs a square crop. I have convinced myself that the verticle crop is a poorer choice all other things being equal unless the entire verticle dimension can be seen in the browser without scrolling. If screen resolution is 800 x 600, say, that means the verticle dimension can only be 450 pixels to be safe and that's making it a bit narrow and small overall. At 1024 x 768 you can go to about 500 pixels and still be safe. A 500 x 500 image will feel bigger than a 300 x 500 image will.

So this line of reasoning leads me to prefer the square crop, not because the image itself would be better but because a voter could see it all when voting.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Correction: the above was meant generally speaking; in case of this particular photo i like the best guarawa's version.

I prefer the original entry. The square crop emphasizes the height of the person, whereas the original emphasizes the height of the hill and the fact that the viewer is looking up to see the subject. I think that makes the original convey a stronger sense of communication because it's clear that the subject has picked a specific place to communicate from, so more people will be able to see the message.

I don't mind ... that's why I asked for suggestions : )

I seem to have over-estimated the importance of the grass in establishing the high position, as your version does still give the impression of being on a hilltop.

As a straight photo (not as a challenge photo) I think I like the square version, as the "best part" of the photo is the light on the shirt.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions!
