You can only muck up the environment so much until it will start to crumble around you so that human habitation will be impossible. The earth will survive, but society and culture as we know it now may not. We need to put a lid on our wasteful ways, which capitalism seems unable to do, especially in its current form as embraced by the Bush administration. Why can't the conservatives apply conservatism and conservation to our planet? We're only given one. |

Yes.
@Achiral - I've been to China. It's a sight better than Mobile, Little Rock, Raleigh and St. Paul.
Oh, except the roach on a stick. Don't eat that.

So, here is a victory for the left which I must concede.
The environment is not as weak as it is presented. It is even presumptious to believe that a planetary system that has evolved experiencing the pains of its creation from untold swings in temperatures to scorching solar explosions and radiation to our current mutation. Animals have been found frozen in ice with grass in their jaws. An upheavel that took place so rapidly. There have been big upheavels and there will be more to come. Our time line is too short to record anything of value and all we do is talk like fools because this is a topic that is truly too big for our dissection. |
Why does it seem that you believe everyone more liberal than you is a wacko or a loony?
Quite frankly, I resent that implication.

That system you so admire is not sustainable. Your grandchildren, me and my children will be the ones the burden from our arrogance, greed, short sidedness and separation from nature will fall on. |

Does America "tower above"?
I don't think so, and I don't think you can find a single objective analysis that will demonstrate that our current version of Capitalism has brought notable benefits to the body of the American people.
In fact, you will find the U.S. ranked toward the bottom of most indices.
The constant chant from politicians about how great we have it here in the U.S. is a huge load of bunk.
Sure, SOME people are doing just fine, thank you. But MOST are not. Not by a long shot.
Not compared to many countries around the world, that is for darn sure! They have much higher standards of living than the median American, much better education, much better health and heath care, much less stress in their lives, real social safety nets which include retirement, and virtually no poverty or crime compared to us.
The U.S. doesn't really tower that high at all, IMO.
Sad to say, because we could have had it all.
Now, to me , it looks like we are on the eve of the worst economic collapse our nation has ever seen. I can tell you that IF Bush steals another election, I am leaving the country.
I am selling off most of my possessions, and converting my dollars to Euro just as fast as I can.
I urge you all to consider doing the same. do some reading about our enormous national debt, where it is going under the disasterous hand of Bush, and what will happen when our creditors start pulling their monies out of our currency. It is already happening.

Steals or wins fairly, cause fairly IMO would be even worse. It sucks to have to realize that the country where you were born is no longer safe and no longer smart. |

From this article:
"PETER Costello's closest adviser fears the US is heading for a devastating financial crash that could ravage Australia's economic growth.
"As the Reserve Bank considers raising interest rates at its board meeting next Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Ken Henry likened the flood of money pouring into the US to support its budget and current account deficits to the stockmarket's dotcom bubble of the late 1990s.
"Were it suddenly to stop, there would be shockwaves felt throughout the world's economies...
"Fears that the world economy is in grave danger are growing in the major financial capitals.
"The International Monetary Fund, which is responsible for stability of the world economy, also warned yesterday of a sudden collapse...
"The boom in investment in American financial markets could be brought to a halt by a number of developments, Dr Henry said.
"A slowdown in American growth could lead international private investors to pull out of the country.
"Foreign central banks, which have been buying long-term American government bonds, are already facing big losses as a result of the fall in the value of the greenback.
"What if they change their mind?" Dr Henry asked.
"He said it was imperative that the Americans take action to reduce their budget deficit, while they should allow the value of the US dollar to fall further."
