After viewing some of the very interesting work of Leslie Davis, I was wondering if it were possible to make a "digital" pinhole camera. Rather than have the light fall on film of some kind, would it be possible to somehow have the light enter the camera's lens. In short, I can see how you can create, possibly, a tiny pseudo-aperture.

Do you think this might work?

i know it can be done, i'm taking a class right now taught by a pinhole photographer, and she mentioned it can be done... if no one responds, i'll ask her again on wednesday.

Yes, many people are doing this by drilling holes in a lens cap. You can also drill a much too large hole in the cap, and put black-painted foil on the inside of the cap. You pierce the foil with a needle or something smaller (?) and voila, a digital pinhole camera. Here's a page that might be useful.

if you are crafty you can make your own, I have had good success with brass shim stock, a sewing machine needle and a piece of 400grit sandpaper. If you are curious, I'll explain the whole hole making process, but for now, suffice it to say that it's a big improvement over jabbing a hole in some Reynolds Wrap.

You can also buy a body cap that has a pre-made pinhole in place from Calumet.

They also sell premade apertures of various diameters that you can mount into whatever you want.

FWIW, the manufactured pinholes are much more consistent in terms of roundness, edge smoothness and size consistency.

This is interesting stuff. I would guess that I would have to have a DSLR to do this (unless I could find a CCD sensor free of a camera), and the lens would have to be off. I may fiddle around...

Nah, DSLR is not required, some people make those out of match boxes. Tiny hole on the front, a piece of film in the back, and that's it.

Check this out, for instance:

People do, but then it's not digital unless you scan it.

You can make a pinhole camera out of just about anything that you can make light tight. I made one from a 30 gal garbage can and exposed 16x20 B&W paper in it, then contact printed a positive from that. I have also made them from matchboxes and exposed single frame size pieces of 35mm film. Fun stuff.

if you have a DSLR you can get pre-drilled lens caps here
