I normally never asked why my photo placed where it did because I know that different voters interpret photographs in different ways. I tried to step out of the box with this photograph and place the sting in the shape of a FACE with one can at the mouth and the other can at the ear. I know there are some flaws in the photograph but out of the 50 votes that were 3 or less, not one comment. Please tell me what you think, did it get caught up in the “can and string” syndrome, was it bland, did voters not notice the face?
For the three voters that commented, THANK YOU. And thank to everyone that voted as well.
Please give me your take on this photo, please.

I gave it a 7. Its possible that voters were fatigued with the excess of tin-can shots. I've also noticed that to get a lot of comments, you need to score over 6 or below 4. Average scores do not get comments :(

I didn't see the face. I gave this a 5, which is a "good photo" that better than just meets the challenge to me (4 is a photo which meets the challenge but that's about it.) After 5, I vote based on impact of the photo, artistic value, and technique.
Personally, I was hoping to see photos with a deeper meaning to "communication" than simple pictures of devices. I felt many entries were too literal in their interpretation and not willing to go out on a limb to make an artistic statement.
My favorite for winning the challenge was the teacher in front of the blackboard, but that came in something like 50th! Shows you how we as a society understand and value education.

Yep, sorry, now that I see it, there's a face (maybe you should have put something there for an eye)... but I think I got "can and string" syndrome, as this was one of the last photos I voted on.
Now I wonder if there's some way of gathering all the similar-themed photos together, like all string-and-cans, communication towers or whatever. |

Oh wow, I didn't even notice the face until you pointed it out! The shape could have been a little bit more distinct, but I also guess I wasn't paying enough attention to the title to realize that the bit in quotation marks was telling me something about the photograph. Maybe if the nose had been a bit smaller and the can at the mouth were angled a little differently? Right now it seems to be pointing more at the nose, so it may help to tilt it slightly more horizontal or to keep the angle but move the can down a little.
I will say that I gave you much higher than a 3 but I'd rather not reveal exact scores. ;) However, I think you're right that your submission suffered from being too similar to several other submissions. It's a nice shot, but it required an extra special (and obvious to viewers) twist for a tin cans and string photograph to stand out among the crowd. |

I didn't see the face either, I think it could have been zoomed out quite a bit so you did not have to look all over the photo to see the shape. The lighting did not really do much 4 me either as the can in the ear kinda disappeared a bit. I gave it a 5 met the challenge with out clear faults but didn't really do anything for me.
