It may be a stupid question, but what would it cost to have a website developed for me? I have all the sample pics, and a logo I like......but no time to do one for myself(not to mention, the knowledge) It would have less than 8 pages, but I also need a spot to put photoshop galleries, so that my customers could view their proofs online? How would you give them a password access?? Too much for this mind? Any advice or offers, I would like a few prices for you all if your are interested. I would like to help someone out here in DPC land make a few bucks?

I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that sites are priced based on the MB you'll need. Pictures take up a lot of memory but I think companies are giving more space for less bucks these days. I pay $20CND a month for mine and it's got LOADS of room I'll be expanding in to. The $20 is just for hosting. Website design will be dependant (of course) on the individual designer. The ones I know charge about $50-$70 an hour and mine took a few hours but it's basic.

Hey parrothead,
I use a web hosting service called
lunarpages
they charge 7.95 per month paid annually...
Starting at $7.95 a month includes 1000MB storage(one gig) and 40GB data transfer...
I made my webpage using "Coolpage" "what you see is what you get" then export to html, and FTP to my webhost...
coolpage cost me 50 bucks a couple years ago...
To make my Galleries I used Jalbum
it's Free and very powerful album generator...
If you have any more questions, let me have 'em...

I appreciate that jeff! I guess I just need to bite the bullet, and do it myself? I spend sooo much time at this d**n computer that I really dont wanna do it? At least the initial design of it. I could maintain it!

those are pricing for hosting website which you need to do so that the world can see it.
To answer your question on developing a website, you will have to shop around. Prices vary depending on the knowledge and skills of the person that is making the site and how much time they have to spend on it to do it. |

I got my domain and website through //www.betterphoto.com. They have pretty simple designs that can be generic. I recommend looking at their Deluxe websites. I have one, //www.onceinalifetimephotography.com I know, nice long name, but it suits me and my approach to my photography.
The best thing about this site is that I had my sight within days. Creating new Galleries is as cinch!!! (a good thing for your if you wanted to give each of your customers their own gallery). You upload photos, which you can do multiple photos at a time, dial up that may take awhile. You create your galleries. You assign your photos to the galleries you want. It is that easy. I'd be willing to let you browse behind the scenes of mine if you PM me. It is about as simple as you can get for the price, and you are given some flexibility with it's format. Look at a few of the galleries. There are some nice ones. I paid $180.00 (breaks down to $15.00 per month). I don't spend much time at all uploading pictures and creating galleries though. I think it's worth it for me.

i use godaddy.com for my website....it was 9 bucks a year for the .com, and 4 bucks a month for hosting (1 gig of bandwidth which is fairly limited, so you might wanna get more bandwidth) I made the site myself.
www.phdmidcoast.com but i'm just a 20 yr old kid takin a semester off from college and workin full time, so i had time to mess with it. It will take awhile to load on dialup. I'm not sure how to do customer galleries where you use a password to access a certain gallery, but a guy i know.. www.nabilphotography.com gives them a gallery on part of his site that only the customer knows the address to... ie. if your name was bob and he did a shoot for you, you'd go to www.nabilphotography.com/bob to see your pics. anyways take a look at my site and see if you like it. I just kinda taught myself so if it's not lookin right for ya no worries, but if you dig it let me know maybe we could see what's up for getting you a site?

I'm using yahoo small business hosting which is $11.95 per month for 2GB of web space and 25 email addresses with 2GB for each of the 25 accounts. You are allowed 25GB of bandwidth each month. They only count // download bandwidth. When you are browsing your site working on it from within Front Page or on their hosting site it does not count against your bandwidth total. Their hosting service also supports FrontPage 2002 server extensions at no extra charge. I am very happy so far with them.

I use Omnis Hosting for my site
AllYourPictures.com on a quarterly basis at around $100/year I think. Nice size site and good service, mail, etc... I have tried using Coppermine and Gallery for php driven photo galleries. There is a link to Mike Owen Photography on my site which is using Gallery. I have a couple of pure html galleries on the lower left that I used JAlbum to create, it's a pretty sweet program. Apparently search engines like real html better than php and database driven galleries but I don't know for sure. I am planning on a minor rewrite to my homepage 'when I have time'. Another reason to pay someone if you have the money. I am also trying out Smugmug for direct sales (soccer games, events, etc...) although I may switch to Shutterfly at some point. Smugmug had a better size allocation. Hope this helps and wasn't too long.

You are preaching to the choir, my friend!
I've been playing around with my website for a bit now and I've come to the startling conclusion that web programming, html coding, table formatting - whatever you call the beast of web design is simply not for me. My dream site would have a simple but elegant home page with links to simple but elegant galleries. I would like the galleries to be something I could add to the PS presets so that updating would be easy. Lastly, I would like the navigation to be intuitive. Am I asking for the world? If any of you folks are good at this sort of thing and would like to make some $$ (not a whole lot 'cause I'm poor), please, PLEASE pm me at your earliest convenience. |

Websites can be easily created and dynamically updated using content management systems like //www.mamboserver.com. And there's an entire community full of support at //www.mambers.com and //www.mamboportal.com. Once it's up, all you need to do is simply log into the back end and create your content or upload your pics. Simple but you need to take some time to learn the system itself. And it leaves about a 10mb footprint on your webserver.
And did I mention it's free and runs on PHP/MySQL? //www.perezdesigngroup.com is based on Mambo and so is //www.devshed.com as well as many others.
Or just pay $99/yr and use //www.smugmug.com Pro service. You can manipulate the footers and headers to your liking and even specify watermarks, large/original access and specify your own pricing. Orders are fulfilled through //www.ezprints.com
Just an fyi...

I host with ICDSoft for $5 per month and 333 MB storage. I have been very pleased with them. Their customer support is excellent. I created my own gallery using Perl & PHP, but for an easy solution, check out Gallery for a free and very customizable solution.

kinda off topic but geeze 70 bucks an hour as a web designer, look at your local college; i would htink that most would do it for a 2 pizza's and a 6 pack and to use you as a reference.
If you host your own and don't mind mySite.dyndns.org you can have unlimited webspace for $0 a month + your regular broadband (also good for prototyping)
Also you should get a certain amount of space from your ISP already

You touched a sensitive spot with that comment there, Spitfire. If the appeal of a local college student appeals to someone, then please, follow that path. I get a lot of clients that took that route and contact me later to 'fix' their site.
Would you get a local college photograper to shoot your wedding on reference alone? Then why trust your branding, reputation and company presence to someone similar? What kind of quality do you expect?

Please don't do this for a live site. Testing environment is fine and even remote access is great but home broadband will not offer sufficient speed for live customers to browse a site or photos. And you'll be forced to stop surfing just to accomodate the visits. I've been there and done that. Now, if you live in Europe where a typical customer has 10mbit connections, well, that's a different story. ;)
