I'm just wondering if my score would've been higher if I had blue eyes too. |

My score may have been more due to my beautiful child than my photographic skills, but either way I am so proud :) |

Perhaps. Did you use neatimage or other noise reduction? It looks *really* smooth to me, and I marked it down a bit because of that. Sort of unnatural. Other than that, your skills are really coming along, so don't sell yourself short!

I did use neat image. I liked the really smooth effect because I thought it drew the attention away from her other perfect (its the mom in me I cant help it), little features to her eyes.

I think I would've given a higher score for the non-neatimaged photo. A bit more contrast and I probably would've given a "7" instead of the "5" I gave for the entry. |

dartompkins, seemed like we were going neck for neck with you a bit ahead of me till the end. I think what put me over was I had a 1 vote that was removed at the end of voting.
Entered:
Original:
It was fun taking this lady's picture. I was going around to some Orthodox churches looking for someone to take a picture of, and saw her walk up, started talking to her, and I had my camera to the side of me on a monopod, and as she was talking to me (she was looking right at me), I was snapping pictures off to the side not knowing how they were being composed. I had to crop a bunch to get it the way I liked.

Like faidoi said, I like the un-smoothed version better. A little Unsharp mask, (Possibly a 0.95 radius, 65% strength would do), and a touch more contrast.. just suggestions of course. (oh, and as for the neatimage, don't be afraid to use it, just be really careful with it. Like the old say.. a little goes a long way ;)

I would have scored higher on the non-neat imaged version as well, or at least one with much much less NI applied to it. As said, it is totally unnatural. It does make the eyes snap out, but there are other ways to do this.... :)
congrats!!

I don't think the non-Neat Imaged version would have scored as high. The smoothness is an integral part of your entry. In my opinion, this is a fairly heavy use of smoothing, or noise reduction. Some people will have a negative reaction to ANY level of it's use. Your original is a very good shot and your daughter makes an excellent subject, but the smoothness is what sets your entry apart from so many other technically well done baby shots. |

I kinda thought so too. Perhap I could have toned it down a little and landed somewhere in the middle of the differing views.
Thank you all so much for your helpful comments. I will take all this info with me to the next one. Look out! :) |
