This is technically IMHO my best shot ever from my Rebel. I spent a lot of time on the setup AND lighting. Think I finally have a beginning grasp on lighting issues... However, it didn't score very well. I'm assuming it was because it didn't have much 'pop' to borrow a Setzler term...

Tell me what YOU thought please!

Edited to add: The 50mm f1.8 is an incredible lense!

I gave your picture a seven, I think the time you put into the setup paid off, and you did a great job of isolating the bricks at the front...that said - it might well be part of your downfall here; you were quite possibly marked down for not meeting the challenge, as it appears that the bricks at the front are the subject of the image, and, while you have photographed 'part' of the Plane, your picture includes all of the blocks.

As for the pop factor...you might be right, my initial reaction was something like 'well executed, but doesn't inspire, provoke or generally make me go WOW!'

All in all this is a nice picture, and considering that bright, colourful, well-exectuted set up shots like this generally do well on this site I can only suggest that the above issues with respect to the challenge might have been the problem.

Toys don't score well. I don't know why. It's just a fact of life. :)

Left you a comment on the image...

I gave it 8. I like the bold yellow and blue, and I think it fits the challenge well. The front blocks are parts of the Lego set, if not the plane.

It's a vertical crop so the first thing people are gonna see is the out of focus plane. By the time they get down to the loose bricks at the bottom of the image they likely dont realise they are foreground elements and the plane is an OOF background element. It's also a toy, which a lot of people see as a 'quick grab anything around the house' type of item that beginner snapshooters use. A shot doesnt necessarily have to be bad in order to score low on DPC.

TooCool I want to offer you my apologies. I voted your photo a 4 [don’t reach through the screen and hit me]. I don’t really have a reason to tell you why. I don’t even remember this photograph in the challenge. What I think happened is there were so many photographs to look through, fatigue set in on a lot of people. I tried to avoid that by only voting on about 20% of the photos per day but as I look at your photograph I would have to say, it didn’t work, I dropped the ball and you suffered a low score.
Looking at your photograph now [not under pressure of so many to view] using my voting scale, I would give you a firm 6 if not a 7. I don’t know what to say other than when I make a mistake I will own up to it and with your photo, I made a mistake.
Please accept my apologies.
Scott

At first, when I started reading this thread I thought "somebody finally gave the proper name for the thread". I was expecting a line of posts saying: "It's marvelous, it should get blue ribbon" or something. I was also sure that nobody who gave really low score won't make any comment here (and I was right - 4 given by SDW65 is not so very bad and he offered humble apologies). I was surprised by fair answers, especially moodville, which explained in detail the problem with this photo. My comment on it was kind of short-cut: "The blocks alone make nice composition". Moodville said it all what was going through my mind, but I couldn't express it. I just felt, that with good lighting and crisp image - the blocks as a main and only subject would help this picture (I don't agree that "toys don't score well". There is more behind voting decision I think.).

You know my mark. I wrote it in my comment. Personally I think the question "What was wrong with it?", especially if somebody didn't get any constructive criticism during voting gives more feedback and is less annoying than "It should've done better", although your post doesn't annoy me at all. I truly understand people with ambition.

Good luck with your next challenge and read moodville comment again. I learned a lot from it myself :)

I have to admit, I gave it a 9. I thought it met the challenge perfectly, although it did lack the WOW factor. To Kirbic, in your comment on the photo you ask,"What is the photo trying to say to the viewer?" To me it was a play on the age old spare parts humor. This photo made me smile because it reminded me of my hubby who always has a few extra parts left over when he puts something together and we laugh about it. To me that is what it was trying to say. Where it was lacking is in the plane like some others have mentioned. However, for me I would not have liked it if there were just legos in the photo with no reference to what they belonged to if you were to keep that title. For me, having the front of the plane somewhat in focus was a detractor. It drew my attention away from the legos. having it completely out of focus would have made it more of a background object allowing the eyes to fall unhindered to the lego parts and perhaps enhanced the overall effect of the photo... but that's just my opinion.
