While we're on the subject.... here's mine.

One thing that I found to be important was to keep my card design the same as my website.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. :-)

here is a suggestion you could have one picture to show off and a white background

Me likes. Simple, but also tells us what you do.

Are you guys printing these yourselves or having them done? If you are printing yourselves, how are you laying these out [in software] to achieve that bleed to the edge?

I understand you want to show your work when you hand out a business card, but I do have to agree it is a little too busy. The thing that bothers me most though is the box that has weddings, special events, freelance, etc. That kind of stands out like a sore thumb...but again that could just be me. It doesn't quite flow with the rest of the layout. If you want to show four photos as you have off to left, I think it's fine. That's what you want! I do think you should choose 4 photos that compliment each other though. A sequence of a baby crawling or at least 4 shots of one subject.

I do find those cards posted here with only one image with simple text have the greatest impact though. They are the most memorable.

Hey guys..Im new here...I just wondered what software you are using to do your layouts...just a general question. Ive never done ANY graphic art type stuff...Ive dabled in photoshop...Is that where you are doing these cards?

I've been using CorelDraw for almost 12 years, and have been using Freehand, Illustrator and Quark a little.

I do everything in Photoshop. I haven't got the money (or the need, really) to do my own business cards though.

I'm really glad to see this thread; I almost started one just like it! I am also in the process of designing a card for photography purposes, and this is the design I'm considering. I'd also really appreciate any constructive input, insults, or complete trashing of the design :)

I thought I'd try my hnd at that.
How do you think this one is?
I am trying to keep it simple. Don't know if the Logo is good, or spoils it.

I like how you did the PHP but it looks fuzzy on my screen. I'd say pick a better (more applicable) photo, though. People will probably think you're a botanist. Just something to consider, you want to appeal to the masses afterall.

I am a botanist, at least I sthdued Horticulture for 5 years, so I thought the image was a way to mix things.
Actually I am a compiter programmer, so perhaps I should have the tree growing in computer chips or something.
The fuzzyness is probably due to the size reduction. Oroginal is tack sharp

That is one problem I am having with choosing an image for my biz card - I don't really specialize. At least not at the moment. I do mostly studio work (not portraiture) but I don't want a potential client to look at my card with, for example, a picture of a plant created in studio and not hire me because they think I only do plants. Is any of this making sense? Any suggestions?

Imagineer - that card you did for Setz is an outstanding bit of design mate.

Anyone else feel a "business card" challenge coming on?

John

I like all the cards. They are fun and they seem to show the personality of each indivdual.
I don't think any card is better than the other. As long as you can read the card any person is going to say "wow" when the see it. At least I did.

That'd be kinda fun. Would the business card be for an imaginary company with the acronym DPC?

There are some simple things you could do - such as photographing something abstract. After all, if you're telling people what you do then all you need to do is create an image that looks good.

I did something like that for the other versions of Setzler's card:

The key things to bear in mind are:
> simple layout (not pinboard style - with something in each corner filling the space
> typeface continuity (don't mix too many fonts - and if you have a logo, make them harmonious with it
> keep colour and design simple (multiple colours and lots of detail acts like camouflage)

In short you shouyld treat the design like a photo in terms of composition:
> centred arrangements can be powerful, but rarely are
> offset arrangements create more interest
> allow 'breathing space' around type
> if you have a busy background then your type will need to be clearer and less fussy

Hope this helps
Jon

Some nice business cards here. It would be a good idea to add "business cards" to the galleries, so people could have them in their portfolios and add them to the "business cards" gallery. Then it would be easy to view all of the cards together.
